His Hand

Appointment

His Hand is said to be chosen by Asmodeus himself. Until one reaches official status within The Hand of Asmodeus, they are unaware of the true nature of The Hand's title and simply address them as High Lord.
Only two people have ever held this title, and it is said that Asmodeus communicates through His current Hand who the next should be in the form of divination.
There is no official 'ceremony' once someone attains this rank in order to introduce someone to the role. This is due to the nature of the role being that of a tool of Asmodeus himself, and thus the rank only holds power in that He can enact His rule through the individual. Otherwise, the individual is at his whim, or at least that is what they claim.

Benefits

Due to the secrecy surrounding the divination which His Hand uses to gain orders from Asmodeus, it would be very easy for an individual to manipulate, or even lie, about the orders they have received for their own benefit. His Hand usually lives in far better conditions than the rest of the members of the group, receives far more freedoms and has the ability to control those under him. It is easy to see how this position would be easily manipulated to benefit the individual, which is not something that would be considered too out of the realm of possibility for an infernal cult based on lies, secrets and manipulation.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Removal or dismissal only occurs one of two ways: Through abdication or death. His Hand is seen as a position selected by the God Asmodeus Himself, and thus the appointment is not to be questioned, so removal by democracy is impossible. The only time the position was handed over, the current leader made the intentions of Asmodeus quite clear as to who would succeed him through a divination 'when the time was right'.
