History & Usage

Everyday use

Ether is used as a replacement for arcane power in a place where the weave is suppressed. It can be found powering vehicles and machines, as well as in the core for an arcane focus. Another well known use of Ether is as a recreational substance, which is highly addictive. For those outside of Almeris and thus outside of the anti-magic field, injecting Ether can heighten magical capacity, however often at the cost of magical burn out after coming down from the surge as the Ether leaves the system.
The government of Almeris attempts to conceal this use, especially from outsiders to the continent. There is a lot of propeganda surrounding its recreational use, with the damaging effects of using Ether as a drug well known throughout Almeris and 'Etherheads' (the colloquial name given to individuals addicted to Ether) outcast from society, which often only makes the problem worse as they have no one to turn to, so they end up in 'Ether Dens'.

Refinement

While Ether is most commonly mined, some refinement is necessary in order to make use of it for certain purposes. Pure Ether is very powerful and thus refining it will make is more concentrated. For example, as a fuel for vehicles, Ether often gets refined into a liquid state. As a core for an arcane focus however, it may be kept in a solid state even after refinement.
