Human Species in The Shattered Lands | World Anvil

Human

Humans are an ancient mystery in the shattered lands. The legends tell us that in the beginning there were godlings and humans, and nothing else. Humans can often be discounted as a blank template, that simply enables the creation of other races, but they carry unique skills of their own. When humans breed with any race other than human, the child will carry no human blood, and will completely share their other parents ancestry. Despite this humans have remained quite common throughout most realms.   There's some debate on if human versatility comes from their blank slate status or their pure determination to exist in a world that was meant to outgrow them, but regardless of the reason, humans are naturally versatile and find themselves capable of surviving almost any environment. From the Vikings and Traders from the far north, to the desert nomads, humans vary greatly and they can do whatever they put their minds to.   If you want a character who can be just about anything, you should play a human.

You might...

  • Seek to understand your purpose in the world.
  • Cherish your relationships with family and friends.

Others Probably

  • Respect your flexibility, your adaptability, and—in most cases— your open‑mindedness.
  • Distrust your intentions, fearing you seek only power or wealth.
  • Aren’t sure what to expect from you and are hesitant to assume your intentions.

Physical Description

Humans' physical characteristics are as varied as the world's climes. Humans have a wide variety of skin and hair colours, body types, and facial features. Generally speaking, their skin has a darker hue the closer to the equator they or their ancestors lived. Humans reach physical adulthood around the age of 18, though mental maturity occurs a few years later. A typical human can live to be around 90 years old.

Reproduction

Human reproduction is basic sexual reproduction. Pregnancy lasts 7 months and generally results in a single baby, though twins are not extremely uncommon.

Society

Human variety also manifests in terms of their governments, attitudes, and social norms. Though the oldest of human cultures can trace their shared histories thousands of years into the past, when compared to the societies of the elves or dwarves, human civilizations seem in a state of constant flux as empires fragment and new kingdoms subsume the old.

Alignment And Religion

Humanity is perhaps the most heterogeneous of all the ancestries, with a capacity for great evil and boundless good. Some humans assemble into vast raging hordes, while others build sprawling cities. Considered as a whole, most humans are neutral, yet they tend to congregate into nations or communities of a shared alignment, or at least a shared tendency toward an alignment. Humans also worship a wide range of gods and practice many different religions, tending to seek favor from any divine being they encounter.

Place in the Shattered Lands

Humans are unique in the shattered lands. The only race as old as godlings, but not sharing the godlings divine destiny. Only capable of having human children when with other humans this has lead to two primary camps of humans. Some who believe humans were meant to stop existing eventually as they interbreed with other species and slowly cease to exist, while others think its a divine curse that means humans should only breed with other humans to keep the species alive. Due to how humans are viewed, many other species disregard human claims to realms as they are seen as lesser. This has lead to various conflicts where humans are pushed from their ancestral homes and encouraged, or forced to integrate into other kingdoms. Prior to the shattering there were rumours of a grand human uprising, but the shattering has at least for the moment quelled any such thoughts.

Adventurers

Some hooks for players of this ancestry to help them figure out backstory and why they might be an adventurer

Names

Unlike many ancestral cultures, which generally cleave to specific traditions and shared histories, humanity's diversity has resulted in a near-infinite set of names. The humans of northern tribes have different names than those dwelling in southern nation-states. Humans throughout much of the world speak Common, yet their names are as varied as their beliefs and appearances.
