Blight Nectar Item in The Shattered Empire of Loria | World Anvil

Blight Nectar

Appearance and Physical Characteristics

A highly viscous honey like substance secreted by The Blight. It is an iridescent yellow shifting hues through greens and oranged depending on the viewing angle and lighting. While it isnt truely luminescent it does appear to glow when exposed to any amount of light; however, in true darkness it will not be visible. The substance smells deceptively sweet but tastes bitter and largely flavorless. It is extremely toxic to all Lorian life and is mildly irritating to the skin; however it has great alchemical potential and is the base or key ingredient of many elixers and potions. It is theorized that the nectar is edible and even pleasant to the creatures of the Otherlands, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Production

Blight Nectar is a naturally occuring substance much like that produced of Lorian plants. While not truely Nectar, as The Blight is not truely a plant it is similar enough to have earned the namesake. Blight Nectar can be farmed by cultivating The Blight as well as harvested wildely. In either case the process can be dangerous as the risk of madness, corruption, and Blight Infection is ever present. By controlling the growth of The Blight and using protective materials and rituals it is possible to ecourage The Blight to produce and secrete the nectar for harvesting. The Order of Nox regularly does this, though many other occultists have methods of acquiring the substance.

Crystallized Nectar

Blight Nectar is highly unstable in Loria due to the absence of the Miasma. The exact mechanics of this are not entirely understood, but it has been found that the Nectar can be stored in two manners. The simplest method of storage and the most ideal is to store it in glass vials under a layer of alcohol, this allows the Nectar to remain in its liquid form which is its most useful form for alchemy; however, it is fragile and difficult to transfer and store. Alchemists of The Order of Nox perfected a method of crystallizing the nectar similarly to the way that honey crystallizes. The process involves temporarily stabilizing the Nectar using various reagents and allowing it to crystallize by exposing it to air and heat. The crystallized Nectar is useful in many applications but less so than its raw liquid form. Ground into a powder in a mortar it is used as a reagent in various alchemical process as well as a channeling focus in some cases. The Black Hand has also synthesized the powdered form of this into the dangerous drug known on the streets as Glitter, Goldust, Dust, and Glowdust.
