Military Grade Starships - MIL
Fleet Composition
A fleet is a group of starships, two or more, deployed by a Planet's Navy for any number of operations in foreign or friendly spaces. Fleets are deployed with the expectation that they can operate autonomously without external support for a set Operational Period. This section talks about the composition of a fleet in regards to a Starships Type, not its Class. While a Type Frigate starship operates under a certain number of parameters, the various Classes employed by Planets will each have their own interpretation of what the Frigate needs to do.
Starfighter
The category of Starfighter encompasses an assortment of starship roles, including Reconnaissance, Scouting, Bombers, Interception, Offensive Attacks, and Intelligence-gathering craft. In the modern era, the majority of starfighters are operated autonomously by advanced artificial intelligence systems, drawing from extensive training data derived from real-life dogfights and interception operations. Well-organized interstellar navies maintain a substantial inventory of easily replicable frames for their starfighter operations, capitalizing on the elimination of pilot risk in this AI-driven craft. With training data securely stored and dedicated foundries churning out more frames, the deployment of thousands of starfighters can be swiftly orchestrated with minimal to no risk to pilots. As technology continues to advance and fleets acquire the capacity to engage enemies long before they can even detect their presence, the role of the Starfighter has undergone a profound transformation. No longer limited to primary dogfighting, these versatile vessels have evolved to encompass a myriad of critical functions within the ever-expanding repertoire of interstellar naval operations."
Supercarrier
Within the evolving landscape of interstellar warfare, the roles of the Carrier and Supercarrier have adapted to maintain their relevance. These massive vessels, like the Starfighter, have undergone significant transformations to fulfill their crucial functions within a fleet.
- Carrier: The Carrier serves as a pivotal asset within a fleet, primarily designed to house, transport, maintain, and deploy Starfighters. However, Carriers are not equipped to defend themselves and are highly vulnerable without the protective shield of a competent fleet. Their primary function revolves around providing a secure launching platform for the fleet's starfighter complement.
- Supercarrier: In contrast, the Supercarrier has emerged as the linchpin, the head or heart, of a patrol or strike fleet. Towering over even the colossal Carrier, the Supercarrier boasts not only the capacity to house and deploy Starfighters but also integrates onboard Foundries capable of autonomously manufacturing additional Starfighters. The Foundries within a Supercarrier possess the exceptional capability to replenish the vessel's entire maximum carrying capacity at least once, without encountering failure or operational strain.
Cruiser
- Light Cruiser: Light Cruisers are the true all-rounders of this category, well-suited for diverse roles. They often operate in small patrol groups, safeguarding a planet's sectors or venturing into uncharted territories for exploration. These vessels are the jack-of-all-trades within the Cruiser class, offering adaptability and versatility.
- Heavy Cruiser: On the other hand, Heavy Cruisers are the combat-focused variant of the Cruiser class. While they are fully capable of performing the same roles as Light Cruisers, their primary design and armament emphasize fleet combat over independent operations. Heavy Cruisers are heavily armed and fortified, making them formidable adversaries in head-on engagements. In some navies, Heavy Cruisers constitute the bulk of their fleets, reflecting their specialization in fleet combat and their ability to outgun opponents when needed.
Corvette
- Escort and Patrol: Corvettes excel in escorting convoys and patrolling vast expanses of space. Their compact size and agility make them ideal for safeguarding trade routes and maintaining order in regions where deploying larger, more powerful ships would be excessive.
- Scavengers and Support: Corvettes often play a role akin to scavengers, swooping in to eliminate larger vessels already crippled by other ships. This scavenging role not only contributes to reducing potential threats but also serves as a cost-effective method of disposing of enemy assets.
- Versatility and Adaptability: Due to their relatively low construction and maintenance costs, Corvettes are favored by navies with limited funding, allowing them to invest more heavily in these vessels than in larger warships. This flexibility enables Corvettes to be repurposed for various roles, including anti-mine operations, anti-stealth missions, and even spec ops endeavors. Some Corvettes may also be equipped with stealth or cloaking systems, rendering them suitable for reconnaissance or covert missions.
- Diplomatic Vessels: Given their small size and speed, Corvettes are often utilized as diplomatic vessels, capable of swiftly and discreetly conducting diplomatic or diplomatic-adjacent missions without drawing excessive attention.
- Limited Direct Combat: While Corvettes possess some offensive capabilities, their extremely light armor and weaponry make them ill-suited for direct combat in large-scale engagements. Instead, they may be strategically deployed for tasks such as laying down or neutralizing minefields, revealing stealthy enemy vessels, serving as stealthy vessels themselves for various purposes, or dispatching already damaged enemy ships.
Frigate
- Patrol and Escort: Frigates excel in the roles of patrol and escort, whether safeguarding a merchant convoy, providing protection for a single capital ship, or enhancing the security of an entire fleet. Their agility and maneuverability enable them to swiftly reposition and respond to evolving threats, making them a crucial component of any protective strategy.
- Strength in Numbers: Frigates are often deployed in a "strength in numbers" strategy, where their collective presence enhances the overall defensive capabilities of a fleet. This allows for a more formidable and adaptable defense against adversaries.
- Direct Battle: Unlike Corvettes, Frigates are more commonly engaged in direct combat scenarios. Their size, armament, and maneuverability enable them to hold their own in battles, providing both offensive and defensive support as needed.
- Versatility: Frigates are known for their adaptability and versatility, making them the Swiss Army knives of space fleets. They can be configured for a wide range of missions, including stealth operations, warfare, defensive duties, offensive strikes, mixed operations, troop transportation, patrol missions, and even recreational purposes. This versatility is a testament to their importance and the numerous roles they can fulfill.
Destroyer
- Escort and Multi-Purpose: One of the primary functions of Destroyers is to act as escorts for larger fleets. They excel at safeguarding capital ships and other valuable assets, ensuring their protection in the midst of interstellar conflicts. However, Destroyers are not limited to escort duties alone; their multi-purpose design allows them to undertake various roles across different missions.
- Versatility and Weaponry: Destroyers are known for their versatility and overwhelming firepower. They are equipped with a multitude of weapons, ranging from energy cannons to missile launchers, making them a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. This versatility enables them to engage in roles that could theoretically be performed by other ship types specifically designed for those purposes.
- Group Dynamics: Destroyers are rarely found operating independently. Instead, they function most effectively when deployed as part of a group or formation, akin to a pack of wolves strategically surrounding or cornering an enemy. This coordinated approach leverages their combined firepower and tactical capabilities to overpower adversaries.
- Orbital Defense Systems: Some planets develop Orbital Defense Systems, which essentially consist of massive gun-equipped Destroyers pointed at anything that attracts the attention of the planetary navy. These imposing systems serve as a formidable deterrent, capable of reducing hostile threats to space debris.
- Decisive Power: Should Destroyers be allowed to maneuver into advantageous positions, their overwhelming firepower often leads to a near-inevitable defeat for their adversaries. Their ability to concentrate firepower on specific targets makes them a critical asset in achieving tactical superiority in combat.
Battleship and Battlestation
- Battlecruisers and Battleships: These behemoths are the main combatants within a fleet, often protected by smaller vessels such as frigates and destroyers. While Battlecruisers may prioritize speed and agility over armor, Battleships are the epitome of massive, heavily armored warships. In some settings, Battlecruisers may not even be considered capital ships due to their comparative agility. Regardless of distinctions, both types are formidable anti-"large vessel" ships, designed to absorb enormous punishment while dealing devastating blows in return. In fleet engagements, the battleships and battlecruisers are the linchpins around which victory revolves.
- Battlestations: Battlestations are akin to fortified space stations, positioned strategically within Fold Space Lanes to disrupt the entry and exit of vessels relying on Gravity Drives, effectively trapping any unsuspecting victims within their grasp. Once friendly craft have cleared the area, Battlestations unleash their immense firepower, capable of sustained, unrelenting bombardment for months on end. These gargantuan war machines can obliterate planets and decimate entire fleets. In addition to their formidable firepower, Battlestations serve as multi-functional hubs, housing facilities, and personnel capable of fulfilling various roles required by the fleet during specific operations.
Dreadnaught
"I Fear Noting."
- Overwhelming Power and Intimidation: The primary role of a Dreadnought is to project overwhelming power and intimidation. Their sheer size and imposing presence serve as a psychological weapon in addition to their formidable armament. The sight of a multi-mile-long Dreadnought bearing down on an enemy fleet can shatter the morale of even the most steadfast adversaries.
- Massive Firepower: Dreadnoughts are renowned for their unparalleled firepower, capable of unleashing devastating barrages of weaponry that can decimate entire fleets and obliterate planets. Their armaments are often second to none, making them the undisputed apex predators of the cosmos.
- Carriers of Secondary Craft: While Dreadnoughts are not strictly carriers, their immense size allows them to carry a substantial number of secondary craft, adding to their lethality. These secondary crafts may include various types of starships, further augmenting the Dreadnought's capabilities.
- Self-Sufficiency and Dominance: Dreadnoughts are self-sufficient war machines, capable of carrying and deploying multiple fleets of their own if necessary. They have the ability to defend entire star systems, with advanced sensors that can detect planetary disturbances across the system and long-range armaments that can quantum-lock onto and chase targets through Fold Space.
- Immense Crew and Ecosystem: The crew and personnel aboard a Dreadnought often constitute the inhabitants of entire planets, dedicating their lives to their respective planets and navies. These colossal vessels act as self-sustaining ecosystems with their own cultures, resources, and self-sufficiency.
- Endless Halls of Space: The interior of a Dreadnought can be so vast that some crew members may spend their entire lives within it, never realizing they are aboard a ship until they venture beyond its infinite halls, mistaking the vast expanse of the vessel for the entirety of the universe.
