Angûnz

First discovered by the Dwarves when they reached the bottom of Irëduin, angûnz are draconic creatures that live on the lower cliffs bordering the Skyfield. Although similar to dragons and Kiáron, angûnz have a few key differences.

Firstly, angûnz are omnivores, feeding primarily on mosses, grasses, insects, and small birds. As few larger animals live on the Lower Cliffs, angûnz have, by necessity, learned to eat almost constantly.

Second, angûnz have different anatomy. Larger wings allow them to ride the air currents of the Skyfield, and smaller, lighter bodies make flying easier. Where dragons and kiáron have strong scales, angûnz have tough skin that protects them from both attack and crashes. Similar to kiáron, angûnz only have one pair of legs, located behind their wings. These legs are small and primarily used for hanging from roosts.

Third, angûnz are neither as intelligent as dragons nor as aggressive as kiáron. Quite docile, there has never been an instance of an angûn attacking a Man, Elf, Dwarf, or other such person without coercion or other such factors involved.

Habitat

To fully understand the angûnz's habit, one must also understand the basics of Irëduin's geography. Irëduin is an upside-down dome of earth floating in an endless sky-coloured void filled with smaller islands and clouds. The angûnz nest at the bottom of the dome, among the crags of Irëduin's lowest reaches. However, they do not inhabit caves, instead hanging from the rock like bats. As a result, angûnz learn to fly almost as soon as they hatch.

Utility

Some cultures in Irëduin banish their criminals underground to wander the dark forever, and a large percentage of them find their way to the bottom of the world. When they do, some decide to try and tame an angûn and use it as a mount. Some are successful, and spend their days flying the angûn around the Lower Reaches.

In rare instances, an angûn will get blown up to the Upper Reaches by a stray air current, and will be captured by surface dwellers. Generally they are used as patrol creatures if not set free, as their anatomy is well suited to such a job.

Dwarves rarely utilise the angûnz, as there is little use for such creatures in the Dark Kingdoms, and they view the risk of falling into the Skyfield as too high for such limited gain.
