Pakani Remembrance Feast
Remembered for eternity
This story shall the good man teach his son; After the Defense of Pakani was completed, and the rebel forces driven back, soldiers celebrated their victory and honored their fallen comrades with a feast. The feast and vigil that these soldiers held was repeated, year after year, in Pakani, and soon became a tradition.
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...
– A long-forgotten speech
History
The Defense of Pakani lasted for three days, until the decisive, smaller, Battle of Pinae Tais led to the death of Ravana, Bandit Commander's last wing commander. Ravana, left with much of her upper leadership dead, was forced to retreat back to Rienapol.
Immediately after the conclusion of the battle, Elder Mui of Pakani commissioned a ceremony to honor the seven fallen elders and four hundred soldiers that had died in the defense. Wanting to celebrate their victory as well as mourn their losses, he set up a traditional celebratory feast, followed by a traditional Noralin burial of the dead.
Execution
Every year, the battle is commemorated with a reenactment in the morning. Then, at noon, the citizenry gather in their homes and celebrate, eating heartily and reading passages about the heroism of the citizens who volunteered to fight. Then, finally, after the dinner, the town as a whole sends a flaming single-mast skiff into the sea as an offering to Tukod after their rituals.
