Deimos Particle Accelerator

Nobody knows what happened there, that's why we sent you to investigate it.
— Anonymous, 2094 A.D.

The Deimos Particle Accelerator was a Martian facility built on the natural satellite of Deimos. It was one of the largest particle accelerators ever built, with the main collider laying on the entire circumference of the planetoid. Its purpose was to study the behavior of hadrons and baryons, but an incident that occurred in 2094 changed history forever. The mysterious destruction of a large portion of the facility, including the staff present on ground zero, started a chain of event that would eventually save the declining human race.

After a thorough investigation, the UN admitted that the incident was, while tragic, a one-of-a-kind opportunity for humanity to leave the Solar system. What destroyed the facility was nothing less than an artificial, traversable wormhole. This singularity was unstable and collapsed shortly after its creation, but everything within its confine was instantly displaced to the wormhole's exit. Further studies of the remains confirmed the theory, and research into these new singularity began in earnest, including within the repaired Deimos Particle Accelerator.

Most of the knowledge regarding the facility was lost during the Colonial War. What is remembered through the generations is that the Deimos facility was the cradle of modern DSM drive technology, even if only a handful remember why. Beyond this symbolism and some general information on the facility and its operator, all the technical data was lost with the Ulysses, setting back the newly started research on DSM drives for more than a decade. Still, DSM drive technology moved on and improved over iterative implementations and updates, forgoing the need to know more about the Deimos facility.
