Hikori

Hikori is a unique material found on the planet of Jana that can drastically change its properties based on extended exposure to specific temperatures. Normally a black metal in its natural state, Hikori turns a bright red when exposed to extreme heat and a deep blue when exposed to the cold. When heated up at intense temperatures of at least 4000 F, it retains that heat and can be used to slice through stone and metal by simply melting it. When exposed to freezing cold of at least -400 F, however, it retains the properties of such intense cold, capable of freezing the blood inside a creature struck by a blade made of it. More mundane applications of this material for the inhabitants of the world are to help survive the extreme temperatures of the planet’s sides, carrying a small amount on one’s person can be used to help keep one warm/cool depending on need. A popular use for the material, for those that can afford it, is to integrate a small amount of it into alloys for ships and other vehicles that expect to enter a planet’s atmosphere, the frozen form of it allowing things like drop pods to avoid burning upon entry.
