Dragon's tears Material in The Ring of Fire and Dragons. | World Anvil

Dragon's tears

a material found in the wasteland between Vantage and Mossfellbaur, this substance is greatly prized for its ability to protect the bearer form psychic damage. Those who wish to prospect for these pebble-sized glass rocks must avoid the very real hazards of the wasteland: mutated flora and fauna, lack of potable water or any edible forage, and of course, the mutagenic properties of the wasteland itself.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Dragons' tears are most often drop-shaped: the largest found to date are about the size of a quail's egg, most run to about half that. The material is similar to glass or obsidion, as it is very hard and transparent. Color and shape seem to be rather randomly determined, though some speculate that all the shapes can be formed by splashing molten glass. The tears melt at a point similar to glass, however upon melting, the color of the tears are expelled from the molten mass like dross, and are possibly consumed or lost. At this point the material is indistinguishable from ordinary glass.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Dragon's tears are valued for their ability to protect the bearer from psychic damage. It seems to create an small field of magic that negates psychic energy. The swirls and bubbles within the material actually spark and move when exposed to psychic energy.

Geology & Geography

Only found in the wastlands surrounding the ruins of Katara, prospectors have been reluctant to reveal the locations of their finds. But most will admit that the tears are most commonly found very close to the surface, and that a shovel and rock sieve are the best tools for finding them.

Origin & Source

According to local lore, the tears were created by a dying dragon who wept over the destruction of its beloved city, Katara.   However, this legend remains unconfirmed. Some experts have proposed that this material has nothing at all to do with dragons. They thorize that the material was produced by a cataclysmic event that reduced Katara to ruins.

Life & Expiration

The color of a dragons tear seems to correlate with the duration of its efficacy. Darker tears are the most prized. The color fades as the tear is exposed to psychic energy, and once it becomes clear it has no discernable protective effects. Attempts to recharge tears have proven unsuccessful.
