Xol is the Flayed King: a god of blood, death, and torment. Unlike the rest of The Nine, who benevolently offer their mortal worshippers the chance to save their souls, he offers only the cruel fires of damnation. According to Old World mythology, Xol was created by the deity Vaya-Vatu to serve as an impartial judge of the dead. However, something deep within him was flawed beyond repair, and he quickly rejected his design, turning away from the other gods and toward the path of malice.
After his fall from grace, he stripped himself of the beauty that was bestowed upon him by his creator, becoming a skinless monstrosity that towers over even the greatest of giants, horned and covered in sinewy flesh. Followers of the Flayed King are few and far between, for the sacrifices he demands are more than any sane person could bear. Yet, there are always those desperate enough to seek his favor, willing to offer up anything for a chance to change their fate (no matter how twisted).
His purest essence (also known as his “True-Form”) is imprisoned beneath the deepest circle of Hell, and the key to his release is held by the devil Asmodeus himself. Xol’s very existence serves as a reminder that every deed, even those with the noblest of intentions, can have unforeseen consequences. The price of power can be steep, so any mortal who dares to meddle in the affairs of gods and fiends do so at their own peril, for the Flayed King’s wrath is a force to be reckoned with.
