Rekyan Dwarves

Dwarves that have survived the gusty islands near The Storm threshold to the south to mine rare minerals from the volcanoes in the area.

Physical Description

The Dwarves of the Rekyan Bar are shorter than average for most dwarves and are shaped much more stoutly thanks to the heavy stone armor they wear. Their pupils are mostly filled due to the unending darkness of the overworld and the underground bunkers they live in. Many of the Rekyan sport some form of dark eye wear to use in smelting or to stare at the lava pools to fish out rare minerals that may be hidden underneath. One can tell the most experienced miners through the burnt ends and unquashed embers of their beard. All dwarves would never think of shaving their beards but in the case of the Rekyan, the shorter the beard, the better the miner as it signifies that those are the most willing to edge close to the lava pools. Their bodies are covered in soot and dust as further insulation from the heat and wind save for their feet which are swollen and calloused to the point of numbness. The Rekyan hardly smile but when they do, the eyes are pulled to their perfect set of teeth in front and the mangled molars in the back from years of checking gem quality.

Culture

As the land of the Rekyan Bar is mostly inhospitable on the surface, the Rekyan Dwarves find homes underneath the surface, being careful to avoid lava pools and underground currents. After centuries of digging, most Rekyan Dwarves are able to determine the thickness of stone simply by slamming their hands on the walls of a cave. They primarily eat fish from the north shore of the Rekyan Bar where the winds are less blustery, farmed mushrooms, and algae/plankton that grow near lava vents both underground and underwater.
The Rekyan Dwarves have a heirarchical, centralized system clearly defined by the stone armor they wear. Rekyan leaders wear dense metal armor while most Rekyan Dwarves wear any range from cheap volcanic rock armor to higher quality imported rock armor. They are a fairly open society allowing travel to their islands freely knowing that most people would not want to come to the Rekyan Bar unless they had a very good reason to do so. Most humanoids that visit the Rekyan Bar must take extra care to weigh themselves down before making landfall or risk flying into The Storm.

Important Individuals

The ambassador for all Rekyan Dwarves' business with the rest of the Calms is Revane Stoneforge. He is in charge of managing shipments in and out of the Rekyan Bar as well as maintaining relationships between the miners of Rekyan and the rest of the Calms. While he can be very pushy and insistent at times, that is a result of the mountains of work that he has to complete. Without him, the Rekyan Dwarves wouldn't be able to sustain their populations for very long since they have to import food quite regularly in order to work the long hours their outbound requests demand of them.
