Locked Syndrome (Locked Sin-drohm)
Log Line
A neurological disorder that can arise from encounters with the deep.Symptoms
Locked Syndrome is a mental disorder that prevents the afflicted from leaving land. Any attempt to board a seabound vessel or contact with sea water produces bouts of hysterical fear, loss of consciousness, intense nausea, and temporary hydrophobia.Known Causes
The disorder can come from interactions with the horrors of the deep. Some of the first cases came from deep clam divers who encountered a Deep One who left only three divers alive out of a full crew of ten divers. Since then, the cases have stayed relatively low but there is no known cure save for clerics, bards, and druids that know how to cast Greater Restoration.Cultural Impact
There have been attempts to research the exact cause of the disorder but experiments and field studies have been widely unsuccessful mostly due to the disturbed state of the afflicted and the fact that no sailor has been able to capture a Deep One for research purposes. It is estimated that there are at least 20 islanders afflicted throughout the Calms each exhibiting slightly different behavior but all are marked by purple tinges in and around their eyes. The afflicted are outcasts of society since they cannot make a seabound voyage. Many of the afflicted also gain an unhealthy appreciation for the occult and self-isolate themselves near the center of the islands they find themselves in.Related Individuals
Notable afflicted include Reyjawk Kik-Kik and Voldure Polikano. Rayjawk is a Halfling who joined a diving expedition where he was the only one left alive. He is in charge of a small group of Locked on the island of Uma where most of the experiments take place. Voldure is an old elven sorcerer who caught Locked Syndrome when he tried saving a group of divers off the shore of his personal island. He is left alone on his island for the most part and only a select few through invite are allowed to visit him in his lighthouse.
