Tarran

Tarran, also known as "The Cage," is the capital city of Shield Province, situated atop a dormant tarrasque. It is a fortified city that serves as the heart of Shield's governmental, military, and industrial might. Tarran is both a symbol of the province’s rigid control and a functional hub of its infrastructure. Its streets are heavily monitored, and it is the site of numerous facilities designed to enforce the will of the Warlord and the Reflectors. The city is a vast, layered complex, with the upper levels reserved for the elite and government, while the lower levels house workers, criminals, and laborers under tight supervision.

Key Features of Tarran:

  • The Cage: The city’s foundation rests on the massive tarrasque, and the streets and buildings are constructed in a way that takes full advantage of this structure. The tarrasque’s body acts as both a defense mechanism and a natural resource, with various industries extracting materials from its bones, blood, and other components.
  • Military Influence: Tarran is the seat of the military and administrative bodies of Shield Province. The city is known for its immense, imposing walls—both natural (from the tarrasque) and constructed (such as the second ring wall), and its heavily fortified buildings. A massive fortress dominates the landscape, housing the central command of both the military and the Reflectors.
  • Government and Law Enforcement: Tarran is also where the Reflectors operate with absolute authority. The Reflectors monitor every aspect of daily life, ensuring strict adherence to the laws described by Warlord Sylenna “The Gilded Knife” Quar. Surveillance is a permanent fixture, with mandatory listening relays and constant patrols.
  • Industrial Center: The lower levels of Tarran are industrial zones, filled with factories, forges, and work camps. Much of the work is grueling, requiring labor from the indentured, who are assigned to different industries. Here, the tarrasque’s remains and other resources are processed for both internal use and trade.
  • Civic Life: Tarran is not a place for public expression, and freedom of speech is heavily restricted. Public areas are monitored closely, and even the slightest sign of dissent is met with harsh punishment. Civilians live in constant fear of the Reflectors, with arrests, executions, and relocation being common punishments for those deemed disloyal or subversive.

Notable Locations:

  • The Wall of Tarran: This second ring wall is an architectural marvel that reinforces the city’s defensive capabilities. It is also a representation of the warlord’s commitment to security and order. It encircles the central city, separating the elite from the working class and serving as a physical barrier to rebellion.
  • Tarran Bastion: A fortified military academy and the training ground for Shield’s elite soldiers. Its battalions are renowned for their discipline, and it serves as the stronghold for the province’s military power.
  • The Aegis of Eternity is the province’s premier magical institution, located within Tarran. This prestigious academy specializes in abjuration magic, particularly in defensive and protective spells. The academy is heavily state-controlled, focusing its curriculum on preparing students to serve the military or governmental functions of Shield. Admission is restricted to the most loyal citizens and those with high magical aptitude. The academy plays a key role in fortifying Tarran, with its influence extending to the development of the Abjuration Net, a magical barrier that protects the city from external threats.
  • The Reflector Headquarters: The center of operations for the Reflectors, this highly secretive building is where the province’s most important decisions are made, and where civilians are interrogated, reeducated, or punished for their infractions. It is a place of constant surveillance, and its doors are tightly controlled.
