Grung
Grungs of Flux Province
Amid the steaming jungles, bioluminescent wetlands, and volatile alchemical marshes of Flux Province, the grungs thrive—amphibious humanoids whose rigid caste system and venomous dominance reflect the alchemical obsessions of their homeland. Though native to equatorial rainforests, grungs in Flux have evolved into something far stranger, shaped by the province’s obsession with magical transformation and biological experimentation.
Toxic Tyrants of the Jungle
Grungs are territorial, cunning, and ruthlessly hierarchical. They view outsiders as tools at best and threats at worst. Most other humanoids are treated as slaves, alchemical test subjects, or jungle prey. Grung society is strictly divided into color-based castes, with each caste raised in separate hatching pools, absorbing different herbal and magical essences to permanently alter both their color and role.
- Green Grungs serve as hunters, gatherers, and expendable soldiers.
- Blue Grungs fill artisan and domestic roles, from crafting tools to tending hatcheries.
- Purple Grungs act as mid-level administrators, taskmasters, and military overseers.
- Red Grungs are rare and feared—scholars, poisoners, and arcanists who maintain the tribe's magical knowledge and religious rites.
- Orange Grungs are elite warriors trained in ritual combat and toxin-enhancement, functioning like royal guards or enforcers.
- Gold Grungs rule with absolute authority as sovereigns or priest-kings. Their word is law, and their presence is often treated as semi-divine.
Grungs can only change castes through great accomplishment—and even then, the transformation is grueling and dangerous, involving toxic infusions and volatile magical rituals overseen by red and gold grungs.
Alchemy and Control
The jungles of Flux offer more than shelter—they provide a constant source of alchemical ingredients that the grungs exploit to enhance their poisons, manipulate slaves, and perform caste-elevation rituals. Their use of herbal concoctions to control slaves is now infamous; most captives are dosed daily with soporific toxins that sap will and memory, creating pliant workers who exist in a dreamlike stupor.
Some grungs have even begun experimenting with transforming other humanoids into lesser grungs through cursed brews and magical grafting—twisted reflections of Flux’s own history of transformation and genetic manipulation.
Grung Society in Flux
While most grungs dwell in remote jungle enclaves protected by illusions and venom-coated traps, some have made pacts with provincial alchemists or warbands, trading rare poisons or jungle lore for protection or influence. A few gold grungs have even struck deals with Warlord Chaiya “The Alchemist” Vannak, seeing her pursuit of magical refinement as mirroring their own caste rituals.
In rare cases, grungs have appeared in cities like Veyathe or Glassrock, acting as poisoners, spies, or cruel enforcers for criminal or political factions. However, most grungs view civilization as a pitiful mimicry of the jungle’s harsh natural order.
Water-Bound and War-Ready
Grungs require daily immersion in water to stay healthy, a fact that limits their expansion but also reinforces the importance of jungle strongholds. In combat, they fight with poisoned darts, barbed blowpipes, and wicked bone knives, often coated in fast-acting venom derived from rare jungle plants or secretions harvested from captive beasts.
Despite their size, grungs are swift, agile, and terrifying in numbers—particularly under the leadership of orange or gold-caste warriors. Their tactics favor ambushes, psychological warfare, and the slow attrition of poison and fear.
