Goblin

Goblins are a subterranean folk with a natural ability to find weak spots in foes much larger than themselves. Historically, goblins have been known for their cunning, cruelty in victory, and servility in defeat, often using their intelligence to navigate a world full of dangers. Their small size, sharp features, and agility made them difficult to defeat, while their keen instinct for survival kept them one step ahead of most threats.

However, the rise of dragon threats in recent years has forced goblins to abandon many of their more traditional ways of living. Survival has become a more immediate concern than rivalry and treachery, and now many goblins live among other races in cities, seeking the protection of stronger communities and allies. While goblins still retain their cunning, resourcefulness, and quick reflexes, their lives have become more focused on coexistence and adaptation within larger societies.

Goblins in Loam and Shield Provinces:

  • Loam Province: Goblins in Loam Province now primarily live in the city-states and trade hubs of the region. While some still reside in the rainforests and mountainous regions, many have moved to the urban centers to take advantage of the protection offered by stronger factions and the opportunity to trade or work in more stable, controlled environments. Their lives are increasingly shaped by their role as skilled laborers, artisans, and merchants, often forming close-knit communities in underground or hidden sections of the cities. Some goblins have even risen to prominent positions as engineers, tinkers, and sorcerers.
  • Shield Province: In Shield Province, goblins are among the lowest in society but still find refuge in cities under the protection of larger governing bodies. With the oppressive laws of Shield Province restricting many aspects of their existence, goblins often work as laborers, mercenaries, or informants for the ruling factions. Some have joined criminal syndicates or underground resistance movements, finding opportunities to exploit weaknesses within the strict, authoritarian regime. Goblins in this province are typically wary, highly secretive, and quick to form alliances with those who can offer them protection.

Behavior and Culture:

Goblins' lives have dramatically shifted from their traditional, more feral existence to a more civilized one, shaped by the needs of society and the constant threat posed by dragons. While their instinct for survival still reigns supreme, goblins now place much more value on cooperation, trade, and stability than ever before. They are cunning, yes, but they also appreciate security in numbers.

Their cruelty in battle is tempered by their need to coexist with others, and many goblins have adapted to city life by becoming law-abiding or pragmatic, finding ways to thrive within the system instead of fighting against it. They are often found in small communities or guilds, where they can work together with other races to create prosperous businesses or ensure their mutual survival.

Despite their newfound civilization, goblins have not lost their sharp wit or love of mischief. Many still enjoy pranks, games, and intrigue as much as ever, and they continue to delight in cunning schemes, often using their wits to stay ahead of the competition. They can be charming and manipulative, but their instincts for self-preservation always come first.
