Forest Gnome
A constant hum of busy activity pervades the warrens and neighborhoods where gnomes form their close-knit communities. Louder sounds punctuate the hum: a crunch of grinding gears here, a minor explosion there, a yelp of surprise or triumph, and especially bursts of laughter. Gnomes take delight in life, enjoying every moment of invention, exploration, investigation, creation, and play.
Delighted Dedication:
To a gnome, being alive is a wonderful thing, and they squeeze every ounce of enjoyment from their three to five centuries of life. Where elves savor and humans rush, gnomes dash from joy to joy, forever worried they might miss out on something marvelous.
- Gnomes speak quickly, as if their thoughts can’t escape fast enough.
- They manage to listen attentively, peppering conversations with delighted gasps and heartfelt laughter.
- They love jokes, particularly puns and pranks, but apply the same enthusiasm to serious work.
Many gnomes become skilled engineers, alchemists, tinkers, and inventors. Mistakes are celebrated as part of the creative process—if something explodes, it usually means they’re making progress.
Bright Burrows:
Gnomes traditionally make their homes in hilly, wooded lands, building bright, warm burrows just below the surface. Unlike dwarves, they relish fresh air and sunlight, venturing out often to enjoy the living world.
Their homes are:
- Well hidden by clever construction and simple illusions.
- Welcoming to friends, and nearly invisible to strangers.
Modern Shifts:
Due to the increasing threat of dragons and other dangers in the wilds, most forest gnomes have now migrated into cities for safety. They have adapted well to urban life, bringing their cheerful chaos, inventive spirit, and endless optimism into the bustling human and dwarven metropolises.
Gnomes now primarily live in:
- Flux Province: In Flux, gnomes thrive amidst the ever-shifting jungles, rivers, and experimental settlements. Their love of invention and adaptability makes them natural fits in a land that prizes change.
- Muster Province: In the orderly, hardworking Muster, gnomes bring innovation to agriculture, engineering, and military supply chains. Their love of tinkering finds serious (and occasionally explosive) outlets in developing new tools and devices.
- Shield Province: In the heavily regulated Shield Province, gnomes adapt by turning their talents to licensed industries, such as gemcutting, sanctioned alchemy, or mechanical design. Their naturally secretive burrow-building skills also lend themselves to thriving in Shield’s more controlled environments.
Despite the relocation, gnomes remain gnomes: industrious, mischievous, and never, ever boring.
Adventurers and Attitudes:
Gnomes living among other races often become:
- Gemcutters, engineers, sages, or tinkers.
- Tutors for human families, guiding several generations with patient (and playful) instruction.
- Adventurers, seeking excitement, discovery, and maybe a little treasure.
Gnome adventurers bring their infectious joy into every endeavor, sometimes to the great annoyance of their more serious companions. They rarely hold grudges or harbor malice unless deeply wronged. Even knowing that most other races lack their particular sense of humor, gnomes enthusiastically embrace every chance for friendship and new experiences.
