Duergar

Duergar are a subspecies of dwarves whose ancestors were forever changed by the deep, shadowy realms beneath the surface. Over countless generations, living in the uncharted chthonic depths, the duergar absorbed the mysterious and often dangerous magical energies that permeate those spaces. This exposure has transformed them physically and culturally, making them distinct from their surface-dwelling kin.

Duergar are defined by their relentless work ethic, valuing toil above all else. For them, the act of working — especially the craftsmanship of stone and metal — is a way of life, a practice that transcends mere survival or gain. Emotions such as joy or sorrow are regarded with disdain, as duergar see these feelings as distractions from the task at hand. However, there is a strange and unspoken joy in the act of labor itself. A duergar might appear grim or wrathful in most settings, but when working, they might radiate a form of satisfaction that is difficult for outsiders to understand.

While their creations are known for their durability, functionality, and precision, duergar craftsmanship is often seen as austere. They disdain ornamentation or beauty for beauty’s sake, focusing purely on the utility and reliability of their work. For duergar, form follows function, and extravagance is considered frivolous and wasteful.
