Dragon Marks
Dragonmarks are physical manifestations of the ancient bonds between the dragons of the Dragon Isles and the mortal elite of the Born New Academy.
Appearing typically during adolescence or early adulthood, Dragonmarks are living sigils, etched into the bearer’s skin in intricate, glowing patterns.
The power of a Dragonmark is not fixed at birth. Most first appear in a Lesser Form — small, subtle, and granting minor abilities. Through study, combat, and communion with the dragons, the mark may evolve into a Greater or even Grand form, expanding in both complexity and power.
Rarely, a prodigy will manifest a Greater or Grand Dragonmark upon their first awakening, often heralding a destined leader or calamity.
Dragonmark Manifestations
There are twelve Dragonmarks, each tied to a sacred draconic principle.
Lesser Mark → Greater Mark → Grand Mark
Each stage unlocks new powers and deeper ties to the dragons.
Culture of the Dragonmarked
- Employment & Influence: Even a Lesser Mark opens pathways to high command, elite research, or diplomatic influence within the Academy and across the Provinces.
- Appearance: Dragonmarks glow faintly when powers are invoked. Some bearers tattoo over them for vanity or intimidation; others hide them for safety.
- Rarity: About 1 in 20 students at the Academy manifest a Dragonmark at all and if they do, they were born at the academy and come from one of the Dragon marked houses. Grand Dragonmarks are so rare that entire songs and histories are written about their wielders.
- Elves & Dragonmarks: Elves and half-elves are most likely to manifest Dragonmarks due to their deep historical bonds with the dragons.
