Deadspire
Formerly Known As: The Spire
Location: Eastern Icefields, Thunder Province
Status: Abandoned — Declared a Provincial Gravezone (Year 2841)
Overview:
Deadspire was once envisioned as Thunder Province’s future: a marvel of steam and evocation, a self-sustaining city powered by the largest experimental steamcore ever attempted outside Frosthold. Founded during Warlord Darius "The Blank Banner" Skorne’s reign, The Spire was meant to anchor a network of frontier settlements and supply energy deep into the frozen wilds.
Instead, it became Thunder’s greatest failure.
The Spire Project:
- Construction began in 2808, positioned atop a rich vein of volatile alchemical ice.
- The city’s colossal steamcore, named Heart of the Spire, was designed to run indefinitely without needing external fueling.
- Outpost engineers pushed evocation magic and mechanical limits, ignoring safety warnings from Frostfire Arcana scholars.
- Civilian life flourished briefly — homes with enchanted heating, rail access to Frosthold, and mining rigs promising prosperity.
- Deadspire boasted an artificial "warm quarter," rare among Thunder cities.
The Collapse (2840):
- On the Night of First Thaw, the Heart of the Spire catastrophically overloaded.
- Witnesses reported a white explosion that turned night into day, followed by a deafening silence and a sweeping frost wave.
- Every citizen of The Spire perished — either flash-frozen or buried beneath collapsed metal and ice.
- Rescue efforts failed; the dead city was deemed unsalvageable within weeks.
Aftermath:
- Warlord Darius Skorne was exiled by public demand in 2841.
- The Spire was renamed Deadspire, a mark of mourning and warning.
- Provincial maps label the region with black frost sigils, advising travellers to stay clear.
- Local folklore insists that strange lights still flicker above the ruins — remnants of broken magic or restless souls.
Modern Context:
Deadspire stands as a chilling symbol of Thunder’s ambition and folly.
Pilgrimages to its borders are rare but not unheard of — some seek relics from its golden years, while others claim to hear the Heart of the Spire still beating beneath the ice.
