Aarakocra
Commonly Found In:
Mirage Province (Sun’s Hollow region), Shield Province (Eastern Ridges), Thunder Province (High Tundra Pines and Stormpeaks)
Overview:
Sequestered in the highest mountains and atop the tallest trees, the aarakocra are a people of the skies — a mystery to most ground-bound folk. To glimpse one circling overhead is considered either an omen of great fortune... or terrible disaster, depending on the province and the observer. Revered for their speed, feared for their elusive nature, the aarakocra remain fiercely independent despite the world's shifting politics.
Origins and Culture:
- Ancient migratory clans originally born from the boundless skies of the world’s untouched wilderness.
- Live in sky-bastions — communal nests woven from storm-bent wood, cloud-thread, and enchanted stone, perched so high they vanish into mist.
- Highly spiritual, tying their identity to the ever-changing winds, celestial bodies, and the raw elements of the world.
- Clans often maintain strict seasonal migrations between different provinces, soaring across borders that landwalkers fight wars over.
Society and Beliefs:
- Governance is decentralized — each clan rules itself through a Council of Wings where the eldest fliers and fastest scouts hold the most sway.
- Value personal freedom and clan loyalty above all.
- Their oral histories are passed by Windcallers, respected lorekeepers who sing memories into the winds for future generations to find.
Relations with Other Peoples:
- Distrustful of most land-dwellers but willing to ally when mutual respect is shown.
- Respected as messengers, scouts, and storm-tamers in regions that can gain their favor.
- In Thunder Province, sightings of aarakocra are seen as a sign that a major storm — political or natural — is coming.
