UNV Rubicon

"And thus, with the passing of this resolution, the United Nations Department for Extraterrestrial Peacekeeping is hereby established. I pray that the stars enjoy a peace that Earth has so sorely lacked."
— Secretary-General Cornelio Colantuono

Overview

The UNV Rubicon is a United Nations peacekeeping vessel stationed in orbit around Deimos, one of two moons orbiting Mars. Constructed a number of decades before the events of the collapse, the Rubicon is one of the larger military vessels of the UN, capable of being deployed across the solar system and equipped with significant logistical and combat capabilities. With a crew complement of just over a thousand, the vessel has partaken in a number of past operations, almost wholly focusing on maintaining peace and stability in the various orbital habitats that surround Mars.   At present, the UNV Rubicon is tasked with overseeing the ongoing 'Deimos Crisis' with numerous parties claiming mining rights following the discovery of a large deposit of valuable rare metals buried within its core. Although few expect open conflict to break out, attempts at sabotage and covert operations have already been made, thus making the Rubicon's mission of great political importance.

Characteristics

As previously stated, the UNV Rubicon is equipped with numerous weapon systems and military formations, although it is not technically classified as a true military vessel. Its primary armament includes four railgun turrets, each with two guns, allowing it to engage other military vessels of its own class, although anything larger would pose a more serious threat. Thirty two point-defence turrets are scattered around the hull, along with numerous utility systems such as sensor jammers, chaff, and reactive armor.  Rather than its weapon systems, the Rubicon instead relies on its complement of Armored Cores to deal with serious threats. Made up of pilots from various nationalities, the elite 'Aces of the Rubicon' has garnered themselves quite a reputation for their professionalism and skill in orbital combat. For ground-based threats, the Rubicon always carries a regular peacekeeping force, equipped with armored vehicles and aerial transports, which often find themselves sweeping past poorly equipped insurgents and terrorists.   The ship itself is quite roomy and high-tech, with an onboard AI helping to manage its various functions and systems. Those aboard are commanded by the ship Captain, assisted by numerous others such as the Head of Engineering. Notably, as required by international law, the Captain legally has to report to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, who technically heads the peacekeeping missions that the Rubicon is dispatched to.
