Moonglow Nuthatch Species in The Realms | World Anvil

Moonglow Nuthatch

Moonglow Nuthatches are a species of bird native to the Final Realm. Named for the soft glow they give off at night, these mischievous birds are excellent vocal mimics and have a habit of spooking travelers. People who take it in good humor will find that these birds are also excellent guides.

Behavior

Moonglow Nuthaches, otherwise known as Moon Birds, are vocal mimics capable of imitating even voices. They use this as their main defense against predators, pretending that there are either people or a more dangerous predator in the area. It also has the ability to startle and scare travelers, which these birds do often.   Travelers that treat these birds kindly, even despite the scare, will find that they are able to guide them through the forest with ease. While it is still argued on how Moon Birds are able to know where to go, it is agreed that it is the easiest and safest way to travel the forest.
When I first heard about the Moon Birds, I was doubtful. How would a bird know where to go? I'm very thankful I remembered that tidbit, otherwise I would still be wandering the forest right now. I could have done without the scare, however.

Habitat

These birds are native to the Final Realm, found only in the Crystal Forest. They nest within the natural cavities of the trees, using a crook near the trunk if the bark is smoothed out.

Anatomy

Moonglow Nuthaches appear to be made of a singular opaque blue-tinged crystal carved into the shape of a bird. Despite this, it has been documented to have all biological functions of a normal bird, proving that they are not animated constructs. Over the course of it's life, the wing and tail feathers will darker to a azure blue, making it easy to identify the age of the bird.

Diet

Moonglow Nuthaches' diet is composed of insects, seeds and certain strains of crystal growths. It forages along the trunk and branches of the trees for insects, supplementing it's diet with the seeds of crystal trees. All crystal growths that it eats are observed to be a shade of light blue, and if there are none in the area, the birds will migrate.
