Centuries ago, there was a group of humans who found themselves living in a deep part of the Eldenwood. The native Fae were hostile to these intruders, making their life needlessly difficult, until one high ranking Fae came to them with an offer - accept her influence, and be protected from the Fae. Those humans became the kalashtar, and the Fae, Karri, became the goddess of dreams. The kalashtar are a deeply spiritual people, each having a close connection to their goddess. They keep to themselves, and seldom leave the Eldenwood, though they may venture to the rest of the land on spiritual pilgrimages. And, though they are mostly somber and serious, they still have a Fae-like humorous streak.
