Belak the Outcast
Belak Evenwood (a.k.a. Belak the Outcast)
Belak's world fell to shambles over the course of a single month. It began with his wife Eva, being turned into a vampire and ended with his exile from his community on the outskirts of Ardeep Forest. Once becoming an outcast he became fully focused on his revenge against Afanas Alucard, the vampire that turned and took his wife.
The pursuit lasted nearly 30 years, however when the Druid finally caught up with the Vampire, he found he had missed his opportunity, for Afanas had already been slain several days prior. Inside the lower level of a fortress that was buried centuries ago, Belak found the vampire lair filled with the corpses of many, including Eva who was clearly slain in the attack on the lair. He encased her remains in an ice block which he re-freezes twice a day.
In the place Afanas was claimed to have been staked was a withered and dried out body whom Belak could not identify. From the center of this corpse grew a small tree. Standing only about a foot high, it sprouted two twigs, both with a single bright green leaf. Being a druid he found great interest in this tree that grew in the darkness off the blood of a monster.
This place below the fortress is like a cave system of sorts and Belak found a small underground lake. The water was quite murky but this was not a problem for him as he can purify it. The small tree accepted the water and continued to consume the body. In a couple days the body was gone and what stood before him now was a now sturdy three foot tall tree from which a small apple grew. He took it and ate it. He felt invigorated and years seemed to roll back on him.
He moved here permanently and cared for this tree and it's secret life power. He began to think that maybe the properties within this tree could be used to restore life. Having her body nearby made him constantly think about it and he believed there must be a way to bring his wife back from beyond using this tree. It must be why his path brought him here. Belak has not succeed on this front yet and this has allowed the madness to overtaken him.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Several hours north and east from the @Floshin Estates lay a small rural community of Druids that lived on the outskirts of the Ardeep Forest. It was this community that Belak Evenwood was born into. A relatively peaceful community of Humans , Elfs, @[gnome]s, and handful of others that believed in the natural beauty of the world. Things were pretty laid back here. Many folks at the time had a good amount of magical practice so much was done with little effort. Belak had a fondness with the woods and trees specifically. He spent much of his free time out in the woods, it was there he met Eva, a half-girl from home. She was beautiful.
Education
As with most members of the clan Belak was mostly taught by the masters of the various tasks that you were expected to preform. Sometime this was in the magical arts and sometimes in the ways of reading, writing, arithmetic, and the natural arts. His uncle, a very prominent member in the community, showed him the ways of druidic magics and how to control his powers.
Employment
After showing his skills and efficiency with math and problem solving, and exhibiting demonstrations of his charismatic personality, Belak found himself put in charge of many responsibilities. Devising more/more profitable trade routes, being the front man in the dealings with settlements to get their caravans shelter for the nights and places to sell, and payroll. He came up with the idea to not just sell their own goods at nearby places, but to make the long travel to @Daggerford more often. They would go down to Daggerford to sell, but also acquire goods, then trade those goods from Daggerford with the many folks who inhabited the forest charging a higher price then the cost of obtaining and moving. It worked the other was as well, they could acquire things from the forest folk then take those goods which weren't of great use to their community to sell in Daggerford.
He made a fair amount of money in this business but at the cost of stress and time with his family. When his father passed away he gladly took over the family farm and the land. He was often consulted in political discussions of the community that were financially focused.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Belak had earned a small amount of fame by being the one responsible for nearly doubling the profit brought into the community but he had more fame once he became Belak the Farmer. The bond he was able to forge with his earth as a druid was amazing. He grew the best foods had the biggest flowers and the most beautiful trees more miles in any direction. Some were jealous but many would go out of their way to walk by his property to see it.
By far the biggest accomplishment was his family. Eva was the second best thing in his life next to his son Bolek who has just turned seven.
Failures & Embarrassments
There are still some in town who remember when he first began as a twenty something who thought he had it all figured out. He thought it wise to cut the amount of trips groups took and increased the amounts purchased. Creating a stockpile of goods to ration out and saving money and lives by not going out as much. The idea was good but the execution not so much. The folks ability to ration wasn't so great so they ran out early. Some things just really didn't have a great way to store, even with magic so they would be forced to cheapen or throw away. This sometimes included things meant to be exported which was double bad. After just one month the whole community was reduced to almost no money.
He course corrected with a much better idea, and few even knew how bad off the community was, but the people that did know often would remind Belak of this in private conversations and he hated when it happened.
Mental Trauma
There were rumors around that someone had spotted a vampire, but no real details. People were talking about it without knowing the name of the person who made the claim. People also started to embellish the story making it more and more unbelievable. Belak and Eva were never ones to live by rumor or superstition. They lived by the facts of life and it was on a crisp autumn day that they had entered the forest and learned the rumors true.
They spent the whole day together, something they hadn't had time for in awhile. They packed a picnic lunch and continued the day looking for a new type of plant they could bring back to the garden. They had the intent of being back before nightfall but time got away from them. When they noticed the time, the sun was setting and they started to head back. It was not far however, when they instead had an encounter with a vampire, Afanas Alucard. This encounter resulted in Belak escaping into the wood and Eva being turned into a vampire.
A week passed. Finally here was an evening Eva awoke and didn't feel the trace Afanas that poured upon her nightly. She was alone. In her lucidity, she quickly left where she was and started to make her way home. About a week passed and she knew she was getting close to home when she felt it in her head again. The Call. Afanas wanted her to return and was looking for her . Luckily she made it far enough away to where she had the power to resist. She told herself she would return to him after she saw Bolek and Belak, one last time, and told them why she can't stay and how much she will miss them.
As she had been missing for awhile and Belak had grown very worried about her situation, he was obviously overwhelmed when she returned home. However, while he confessed his guilt for splitting up, escaping, and losing her, and how sorry he was and how grateful she's ok; she interrupted to tell him she does not fault him and that it's better this way because Bolek needs a father to raise and support him. She confesses to being a vampire. She confesses to killing the first person she saw when she got to town.
Eva can't remember who it was, she was far to hungry to take the time to notice, and the fled in shame and disgust when she was satisfied. She tells him she must leave forever and answer His Call. He pleaded and begged and cried for the sake of Bolek. Thinking it wasn't the best idea she agreed to stay for a little while longer. Belak was certain he could find a way to cure her.
Belak was a herbivore, he did not believe in hunting the animals, but she needed something to survive on. He knew he would need to give her something to 'eat' until he could find the cure. It was right away, in these first few days where he committed these brutal acts on these beautiful peaceful creatures, that he started coming to the understanding of what Eva being a vampire really meant and that. She was more peaceful then he. She loved every living creature with all her heart. Belak was jealous of this trait in her. Sometimes he liked the animals more then people and here he was, slaughtering them. He thought how she is compelled to do this and has to do it with her teeth. He began to cry for her.
After a few days of surviving off the animals Belak was able to capture she told him the hunger was only getting stronger and she would have to leave before doing anything extreme to bring shame on the family. When she retired for the day he bound her so she could not escape.
The next afternoon Belak needed to go out and buy some time. He made is way over to and sneaked into Floshin Estates and lured out two watchmen. Things got a little out of hand and he killed one of them, but he got the younger one and dragged him home. When she arose that evening he presented the guard to her which she ate feverishly. Watching this horror cracked apart of him.
For the first few weeks he was able to pull it off. Collect and occasionally kill in early mornings, dragging them home and chaining them in his basement next to his wife. Go into the Community Hall and go over routes and finances then go home and make it look like he was attending to the farm. Then feed Eva, continue he research on the cure, and then take a short 'sleep'. He has barely spoken to Bolek and hasn't told him anything other than mommy was sick.
That same story is the one that had been spread around town. Eva coming home and then getting very sick made folks want to come by to send their best and give some food. Belak didn't want any food, Eva couldn't eat the food, they were fine! He started thanking people but turning them away.
He sometimes thought it would be better if she would just make him a vampire as well, but she kept refusing saying she didn't have that ability. He would convince her someday, can't all vampires make vampires. It was also getting hard for him to get bodies for her. Sometimes he was unable to catch anyone for days. He built a very strong 'leash' for her so she could 'hunt', and he could pull her back if she was getting carried away or if others were coming. It was horrific to watch, yet also satisfying. It's a good thing the leash is enchanted.
As winter rolled in and the nights became longer, Belak thought it a good idea for them to be seen about community as early as they could so people would stop bothering them regularly. She agreed but said she really needed to leave soon, she can feel Afanas calling her and he might be coming. He inquired how he could find her, how well did he know her, how many were there? Her thoughts were too fuzzy but said she knew she had to leave tomorrow. He begged for her to make him a vampire as well again and she said she couldn't. They got into an argument about it in the town square, in front of people, yelling about vampires and murders. People were horrified as the realization set in. Eva and Belak have been responsible for the atrocities commited the recent days. It was during the shock of this revalation that Afanas came and killed several people in town square. At the sight of the blood, Eva lost her cool and broke her enchanted leash throwing Belak to the ground. She began to feed on people in town. He felt so stupid thinking he had her under control. Other spawn showed up as well and a fair amount of the town was massacred. When a semblane of 'peace' returned, Afanas presented Eva with the body of Bolek their son mutilated and drained and told her she had no reason to ever leave his side again.
It was this moment when Belak Evanwood left his mind forever, and now the person known as Belak the Outcast was born. Right before all the vampires left, Belak cried out to Afanas to turn him and take him as well. Afanas smiled and said, 'No', before disappearing with the rest. Once recovering the remainder of the town banished Belak for harboring a vampire and bringing this travesty to their home, to be killed if ever spotted in the area. He left without a word in his defense.
