Jump Gates

MetaSpace Macrotech's Spatial-Folding Hyperlight Gateways, more commonly called Jump Gates, were the peak of psychic technology of the pretech era. Using advanced VI and Braked-AI support partnered with psychic streamlining, precognition and spatial distortion, they could fold spacetime to allow ships to teleport vast distances, potentially thousands of lightyears, in seconds.   The use of the jump gates required the aid of a highly skilled psychic navigator who would pilot ships through one and have them emerge through another. It required immense amounts of effort on behalf of the psychic. In order to lessen the burden on the navigators (and aid less skilled navigators) the gates were slaved to only a handfull of perhaps three to five off the nearest gates to their location. In the case of the coreworlds, this might have been just the next two or three systems over, but on the frontier it was often entire sectors.   With the proliferation of jump gates throughout Mandate space, a massive network of gates was built where a gate's slaved connections would overlap with two or three others. At the heigh of the Second Wave transit time from Old Terra to even the furthest frontier world could be accomplished in just a few hours.
