DatNet

Short for Database Network, DatNets are a catchall term for global information networks common on worlds with a TL3 or higher. Nearly every planet in the Rabian Delta has a different name for their world's specific DatNet (for example, Gunn's InfoMatrix) but all recognize the term interchageable with their local terminology.   In 3122, as more and more ships began drilling into neighboring systems and interstellar travel began to become common again, a new communication protocol was needed to govern the exchange of data between differing local networks. Germain Frohmeyer, a cyberscientist from Clye, is credited with the creation of the Frohmeyer Model that created a series of neutral communication protocols allowing nearly universal data exchange between planets.   With radio-waves limited to the speed of light, the most vital factors in interstellar communication are starships. Henshaw Diamond Drives (HDDs), perfected in the late 2000s by David Henshaw, allow for zettabytes of nearly error free, rewritable data-storage with an relatively minimal form factor. A modern postech starship's data core has anywhere from 50 to 500 HDDs depending on the size and purpose of the vessel. Whenever a ship docks with an world advanced enough to have a DatNet, a fiber-optic connection is made and a near instantaneous transfer occurs where the ship's database is updated with a copy of the world's entire DatNet. Advanced, VI driven algorithms built into the drives root out and eliminate duplicate data files. On the other end of the Frohmeyer connection, the specific world's DatNet downloads the ship's entire database using the same VI dirven algorithms to maximize efficiency.   At any given time more than a thousand of these connections are happening simultaneously across the sector alowing for a disconnected, but synchronized, interstellar information network.
