Ceramics
Often thought of in only its stoneware application such as porcelain and china, the term "ceramic" is actually a scientific term that applies to any metallic or non-metallic substance that has been shaped and hardened through exposure to high heat at extreme temperatures. Advanced ceramics developed in the early 20th century on Old Terra are generally not clay based, but oxide based using chemical compounds such as Zirconia (ZrO2) or Alumina (Al2O3), the two most common oxides found on earth and throughout the Milky Way.
With melting points, durability markers and strength ratings vastly disproportionate to their weight and production costs, advanced ceramics are used in many different aerospace engineering and mechanical properties. Most starship hulls are coated with a ceramic layer to protect them from the extreme temperatures experienced during atmospheric reentry. Many prosthetics and cyberware implants are made from Zirconia ceramics. Alumina ceramics are used in weapons, body armor, robotics, advanced electronic devices and more.
Whether they realize it or not, most space faring people are making use of over a dozen ceramic devices at any given time, making ceramics the most widely used and versatile material in the Rabian Delta.
