The Promised Land

Most of the kingdoms in the Promised Land were colonies from far off lands. The leaders of these kingdoms were advised by the gods to come here.   The continent is riddled with stable and semi-stable portals to the planes for those who know where to look. Denizens of the lower planes want them for their access to the multiverse, denizens of the upper planes want them guarded for that reason.   Thanks to the Ley Lines that cross the continent and thanks to the secrets of the old priests the acolytes of the gods found a way to conjure avatars of their gods. These avatars would be summoned to duke it out, or just to serve as a siege engine. This changed when the followers of Vecna created a secret weapon under the supervision of the god of evil secrets. They created a god-killer; a weapon which when wielded by an avatar and used on another could wound and even kill the god of that avatar. This secret was revealed to the world when it was used to kill the god Torm. Ever after, the ritual of avatar creation was expunged from the annals of history. But not until after the Vecnans and their god killer were wiped off the face of the earth.
