Nestariel, Princess of the Eternal Eclipse
DAY 3 - Prompt: Lair
During Spookoctober, I will create a character sheet for twenty one dark Fae of the Court of Dew and Dusk, the main protgagonists in a new novel filled with humour, mystery and courtly shenannigans.
If Terry Pratchett had written 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' ... well, I am likely not going to be as witty as Terry, but it should be fun!
Backstory
Early life
Crown Princess Nestariel was born only two millennia ago to the Queen and King of the dark fae: Sabine, Queen of the Underlings and King RoulKing of Dusk and Dew. She is the oldest child of two - a boy born a millennia later, called Wyldirion. At birth, the Princess was given the title of a long-forgotten ancestor, the legendary Queen Beaulianne of old: Lady of the Eternal Eclipse.
Nestariel has a half-brother, Prince Daemon Hollowdark, who was born to the Queen from a previous union. The two do not get on very well, but that is a story for later.
From an early age, Crown Princess Nestariel has been used to power and a life of luxury. She has been genuinely spoiled, with most of her wishes becoming a command due to her station. However, her mother, the Queen, has been keen to give her the best education, going as far as charming human instructors to live in Faerie to teach the young princess about the material plane, among others.
Youth/Education
From her varied education, Nestariel has developed an 'empathy' for the different creatures that inhabit her world. These velleities at generosity and understanding have their limits, though. Nestariel is a well-meaning character in the main but very often does not understand the world around her, and she keeps making many mistakes in her life that the ever-fawning courtiers around her are keen to brush under the carpet.
Her bouts of generosity are as dangerous as her developing powers in the land. Nestariel's magic is with bone - she is a bonesmith. Unfortunately, being a bonesmith is regarded as the lowest form of 'magic' and art in the dark courts - it is supposed to be quite common and left to 'lesser' creatures such as Fauns and Centaurs.
Growing up, Nestariel thought she was being passed over for her younger brother, who is growing up to have far rarer and offensive power at his disposal.
Mid Life
In the last few centuries, as her brother became the clear favourite with her parents, Nestariel has attempted to win over the Dark Court through her charm, wit, and goodwill—which put her in contrast with her cold and calculating parents. Her tactics are to become Queen of Heart.
Nestariel came about this idea during a short, diplomatic visit to the Light Court. There, she was impressed by her opposite number's influence: Crown Princess Delphine, Lady of the Luminous Dawn.
Delphine, seemingly not a particularly powerful fae herself, was positively adored by Faerie in general and already had much influence in the Light Court.
However, Princess Nestariel, called @n by her bosom friends, has had mixed results with her charm offensive - sometimes with ridiculous and funny Results. Her three bosom friends are pretty, empty-headed nobles - sometimes mockingly called 'The Three Graces': Beatrice, Lady of Midnight Frost, Giddie, Lady of the Dark Bloom, Mirelle, Lady of the Thorned Vale.
Her parents granted Nestariel a whole wing of the Keep. This is where she holds court every day, seeing courtiers and devising new plans and entertainment for herself and her friends. This is mockingly referred to as the Lair (behind her back of course).
Present
Presently, Crown Princess Nestariel has been 'forced' to marry an Elven Prince. Elves are from a different plane to Fairie and exist in a beautiful dream world which can only be accessed through portals, called Alven.
Elves have nearly always been allies to the Fae, particularly regarding their ongoing war and hostilities with Hell's demons.
Alliances between the two 'kingdoms' are not uncommon and reinforce the ties between the allied planes. Her mother's marital plans privately bummed Nestariel. However, Nestariel is particularly afraid - and with good reason - by her mother and will not publicly go against her.
She has accepted the alliance and will publicly play the dutiful daughter. However, questions remain as to her true intentions in the matter.
