The Grimoire
Among the most curious of warlock patrons is The Grimoire--an ancient tome of knowledge that has slowly accumulated the power of its contents, until it forms a sentience of its own. The Grimoire is able to extend the power of its contents, usually lost and esoteric magic and knowledge, to warlocks who agree to further its agenda, which might range anywhere from reviving their dead master to accumulating more knowledge in their name.
Some of these books are good: the Book of Exalted Deeds, for instance, is a good-aligned patron from this creed. Others, like the Necronomicon, are so soul-shakingly evil that even touching them can be enough to bend a warlock to their service for eons. It’s very rare that a book with such great power will decide to do nothing with it, and as such, these patrons tend towards the extremes of alignment.
The Grimoire lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
When you choose this patron at 1st level, you learn two cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list. These cantrips count as warlock cantrips for you.
At 1st level, you begin to study a particular school of magic at the behest of your patron. Choose a school of magic. Any time you cast a spell of that school of magic, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + the spell’s level.
At 3rd level, if you choose the Pact of the Tome boon, you gain the following additional features.
Book of Knowledge. At the end of a short or long rest where you’ve spent an hour or more studying your Book of Shadows, your patron bestows you with unusual knowledge. Choose one proficiency: a language, a tool, a skill that uses Intelligence, or a weapon. Until the end of your next long rest, you are proficient in the chosen proficiency.
At 6th level, your patron has shown you methods of magic lost to time, and your power grows with startling speed. When you cast a spell from the school of magic you chose at 1st level, the effects are more potent. If the spell requires you to make a spell attack roll, you have a +2 bonus to that roll. If the spell provokes a saving throw, the spell save DC of this throw increases by 2.
At 10th level, your mind has been expanded by the influence of your patron. You gain proficiency in Intelligence saving throws, and in one skill of your choice that uses Intelligence.
At 14th level, the extent of your knowledge is incredibly deep. Over the course of 1minute, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list. The spell you choose to replace it with must be from the school of magic you chose at 1st level.
Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.
