Owl City - Album Cover Redesigns

Owl City is an American electronic music project created in 2007 in Owatonna, Minnesota. It is one of several projects by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young, who created the project while experimenting with music in his parents' basement.

This project was a personal passion project done to build my photo editing skills. Owl City (and their side project, Sky Sailing) was one of my favorite bands in high school, and during an especially nostalgic mood, I decided to redesign all of the album covers.   My intent with this project was not to make "better" album covers; all of the original album covers are all unique and fitting in their own ways. My goal was rather to create a matching set of covers while exercising my photo editing skills.   I felt that photo manipulations would stylistically fit with Owl City's music, which has often been described as "dream-like" or "surreal". For the most part I kept with the color schemes of the original album covers, as I felt that most of them were iconic enough among fans that the colors were strongly associated with the album (e.g. Ocean Eyes being bright blue), and changed just the ones where I felt that a different color palette would be more fitting.   I also found myself using similar imagery for some of the covers, partially to once again stay close to the original iconic album covers, but also for some because I found that certain imagery best represented the songs on the album (e.g. All Things Bright and Beautiful being full of songs with nature imagery).   For the band and album name, I picked one of the typefaces used on Owl City albums in the past ("Quadranta") as I felt it fit the best with all of the albums.   (As a continuation to this project, I've been working on designing single art for all (100+) individual Owl City songs... Check back in a few years for results!)
