The system of faith held by the
Donerthian people. The Donerthians widely believe in a monotheistic religion, centred around a deity known as The Ancient Mariner. An excerpt of the Donerthian creation myth can be found below. Donerthians seem to derive values of strength and fortitude from The Ancient Mariner, or they made this legend to teach those values. Donerthian legend is also emblematic of Donerth's opposition to the forces of nature.
The Legend of The Ancient Mariner
Translated by a Mundian scholar:
Before the Era of Water,
Donerth had land that the seas and oceans could not reach. The people of the land lived in harmony and prosperity, living off of the fruits of ground they tread upon. This bountiful World was gifted to the Donerthians by their God, the all powerful Elbah. Elbah tended to the earthen lands, keeping the soil rich and the air clean. Yet, over time the people of the land grew more and more thankless and arrogant, angering their God. In a fit of rage Elbah submerged all of Donerth's land, drowning the majority of the Donerthians.
Those that survived Elbah's wrath boarded grand ships to traverse the open seas, though the supplies on board were running low and tensions were running high. On one such ship, there was a captain that stood tall in the face of adversity and rallied against the waves. He refused to be defeated by the Elbah, and after seven weeks on sea he saw a physical incarnation of the God. He grasped his harpoon and threw it with all his might. His aim was true and the Elbah was struck down, landing in the centre of the ship. The crew applauded his efforts and that night they celebrated.
The next day the supplies on the ship were fully depleted. The crew starved and drew closer and closer to death with each passing hour. By the time the sun found its zenith the crew were shells of their former selves, and in one swift motion they all jumped off the ship and drowned themselves, as did the crews of every ship. Every Donerthian except for the captain. He alone was left on the ship's deck with the carcass of the Elbah, and he began to hear it speak in his mind.
It was in this moment that the Elbah passed its power onto the captain, challenging him to wield the power of a God better than it had. The only restriction placed on him was that he could not undo the work the Elbah had already done. The captain accepted the challenge, and with his first act as the new God of Donerth he gave the Donerthians gills and webbed feet so that they would not drown. He gave them the second chance that the Elbah would not. The Donerthians came to call the captain The Ancient Mariner.
Since then, The Ancient Mariner has remained absent from Donerth, rarely intervening in events that impact Donerth as he trusts them to make their own decisions.
