Siren's Curse
Siren’s Curse is a biological mutagen that infects the Donerthian population. It is a type of viral infection that can only be passed to another if the pathogen enters the bloodstream. The Curse infamously caused the downfall of Pacifica, one of Donerth's major cities, as the initial outbreak began there.
It mutates the genetic makeup of the individual that the Siren’s Curse infects, with Donerthians developing facial growths akin to marine plant life, fungi, sea anemones and/or barnacles after five days. Over time these mutations encompass the entire body of a Donerthian, eventually becoming so debilitating that they are entirely unable to move (though this process can take up to five decades). On a psychological level, these victims of the Siren's Curse become erratic and violently anti-social. Further, one of the first signs that a Donerthian was succumbing to the Curse was a deterioration and eventual breakdown of their telepathic abilities.
The Siren’s Curse seems to only infect sapient creatures, as other marine life in Donerth is yet to be seen to suffer from the infection. Despite this, and the fact that Donerthians are banned from visiting Pacifica, the Siren’s Curse lives on. It is believed that Sirens will procreate with one another, and that all of the currently living Sirens are Sirens by birth, not by infection.
It is unknown as to whether or not this virus can infect any other sapient creature in the Pontision System, and hopefully we never find out.
