Drow Society

The drow are a people that escaped invasion of their world. However, they were forced to colonize underground by the Pelagasiri elves. They live underground now in large caverns. Their cities are made of stone, and they have an iron age technology. The drow has a society that is matriarchal. Drow genealogy goes back on the female line, and inheritance is through the female line.   The men allow women to control the politics of society. They aren't seen as the weaker sex. Although the society is ruled by women, men are just waiting for their chance. The drow men are generally taller and stronger than women and they protect the women still. While the society is balkanized, only one city joined the Orcish Horde. It was first an alliance of convenience, but it grew to an alliance of cooperation and mutual trust.

Technology

The drow enjoy technology comparable to the late iron age. The drow have swords made of steel, crossbows made from harvested wood, and double bladed swords. Unlike the other elves, which also have an iron age technology, the drow has made great strides in their technology. They developed a water clock and use bronze gears like the Hellenes do. The drow also know how to make items out of Eog.

Marriage Patterns

The drow are polyamorous in their pursuits. They still marry, but it's not a monogamous relationship. The drow believe that a polyamorous arrangement is the best deal. Although the family line is through the female, the men have the duty to teach morality to the children. This is because the men have the right to tell stories. The men pass down the family morals down to their children. However, as the drow adventure back on the surface, it's becoming clear to them that a monogamous relationship pattern might be best. Still, some drow males are talking about plural marriage. An arrangement where a man can marry many women. This idea, still polyamorous, is gathering support. The idea still keeps the females in charge; while the men still rear their children.

Class and Society

The drow have a caste like society.  This society is divided into five groups.  The first are the royals.  The Queen and King.  The Queen of the drow rules the city and directs politics.  The queen decides policy for the Drow and decides the laws.  She governs the royal court and is the ultimate judge for the city.  The Queen isn't all powerful, however, but she is respected by all.   The next in line are the priestesshood.  The priestesses control the society and religious mores of the city.  They hold that Ayatunde, the female spider diety, was the bringer of Civilization.  While Anansi taught the world all the stories, Ayatunde taught the drow how to spin clothing, the first laws, and make food.  Only a female can be a priestess of Ayatunde and be ordained to officiate in the temple.   Next in line are the warrior elite.  This caste is mostly made up of males.  The warrior elite are charged with protecting drow society from the monsters and beasts of the Underdark.  This includes the saurian empire that exists under the ground.  Wars are conducted underground, and the saurians usually have a higher technology.  However, wars between the two races are frequent, and one of the reasons why the drow of one city joined the Horde.  The city needed allies in their struggle against the saurians.   Next in line are the Essence and Mentalism users.  Made up of both men and women, the drow have developed magic to a high art.  The drow Essence users (wizards and arcane) work elemental magic and illusion magic.  The elementalists are mostly women, who control the elements through magic.  The elementalists specialize in the six elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Ice, and Light.  Although there are magicians who are both male and female, the drow have taken specializing in the elements further.  The result is a specialist mage called an Elementalist.  Elementalists help society in several ways.  For instance, earth elementalists help in finding new caverns to colonize.  While fire elementalists aid the drow in their underground wars.  The Illusionists are mostly male and follow in the footsteps of their patron deity Anansi.   The illusionists work illusion.  They aid the warrior elite in their wars with the saurians using misdirection.  Aside from that, the Mentalism users are made up of both male and female.  Most mentalists serve the drow in an unselfish capacity.  While they hardly help the warrior elite, the mentalists often are the ones that aid the peasants and slaves.  Still, there will always be mentalists who are out for profit.  Although such people are often hard to locate and prove in court that they use their abilities wrongly.   The mage caste (being both Essence and Mentalism users) is typically small.  Talented young drow are watched for, however.  Those that have talent in learning magic are typically recruited.  Such learning is conducted through a Master Apprentice model.  Aside from the Mage caste, there are those with deeper secrets.  It's no secret that the Drow commands Arcane Magic (which is a combination of all three realms: Channeling, Essence, and Mentalism).  The Arcanists and Arcane Elementalists are few and far in between.  Still, they are thought of as part of the mage caste.   Next in line are the builder caste.  Engineers and mathematicians, the builder caste is responsible for building new buildings.  Such as churches, temples, houses, and other buildings.  The builder caste are made up of males who understand mathematics and engineering.  They are carefully taught in a Master-Apprenticeship arrangement.  The apprentice is carefully taught how to read and write and solve problems using mathematics.   Next in line are the peasants.  The peasants work the land to grow the crops.  Although the cavernous Underdark lack sunlight, bioluminesence is used instead.  Many organisms in the Underdark are bioluminescent and provide light.  While the drow do not have electricity to generate light, they cultivate bioluminscent life forms to grow crops.  The peasant class includes the artisans, who make works of art.  The peasant caste also includes the scribes, who know how to read and write.   Last in line are the slaves.  Slaves make up the backbone of the work that peasants do, and they do the jobs that the peasants won't do.  Such as waste disposal and maintaining the public works.  Slaves are made up of other peoples who are captured. Mostly they are saurians, but other races can be slaves as well.  The slaves are well treated.  Some of them can also read and write.
