The Dagger of Ulf

“The good seaman weathers the storm he cannot avoid and avoids the storm he cannot weather.” —Unknown.
The Dagger if Ulf is double edge straight bladed weapon, the hilt and pommel are gold with a twisted ivory handle. It is a fine looking weapon but even the craftsmanship of the dagger keeps its greater secret.   Powers It possess two traits unique to it. One, it floats. A strong man may pull it under water by half a foot but no farther. It will even bear the full weight of a man and only descend half a foot. It's other ability is, if placed within a bowl of salt water it will spin and point in the direction of the closest natural source of fresh water, rocking back and forth, the arc lessoning the closer one gets to the source of the water

History

The Dagger's lineage is traced back to before the Fall. The Empire rose because of it's control over those few magical artificers who could create items for magics to be laid into and last. Believed to one of the works to come out of Tol Vivicor, as that Forge was known to produce enchanted items of a more diverse sort then the others. The first written history to carry it is the same who it is named for. The Pirate Ulf was said to carry it for over a decade, relying on it to escape death more then a few times. He used it to discover passage across the Great Silence, finding a series of small islands and atols with fresh water. It was this passage that ultimatly changed his lifes path and that of the Daggers. In exchange for knowledge of the Passage, the Empire would grant him and his entire crew, pardon and Commission into the Imperial Navy. Captain Ulf went on to serve the Empire for a score more years, rising to the rank of Commadore. The Dagger was willed to his Son, a young naval officer. Stories say that many wanted to try to keep it for themselves but the combination of Ulf's reputation and an Imperial Decree kept it in the family for almost 300 years   A descendent of Ulf was carrying it when his ship went down in a storm. It was discovered washed upon the shore by a fisherman who, legend says, found it in it's scabard attached to a torn belt. It was sold at market by the household of an Imperial Govenor en route east to take her new posting. This would turn out to be Isabella Reving. After the Fall she became the Kingdom's first ruler. To secure the Loyalty of the nobility she opened her collection and to each of the seven mightiest nobles she bequethed a magic item. To the Duke of Segla, she gave the Dagger of Ulf.   And for the last four hundred years it has been in their possion, passed form Duke or Duchess to Heir.
