Chapter 7: Of Monsters and Men I
General Summary
The Vagrant Fellowship search around the base of the northern Watchtower. Johnny finds a handful of brass coins on the corpses, in addition to the Ugly Bastard Sword and the Ugly Blacksmith Hammer.
In the meantime, Edgard enters the Watchtower, he finds the watch member known as Gustav slumped dead in a chair pierced by a number of arrows. He then climbs the ladder to the next floor, finding the trap door locked, he attempts to sheer the lock with his axe. He critically succeeds, opening the door with a deft blow.
On the top floor of the tower, Edgard and Vixen encounter Jannik Weiss tied to a post. After releasing him from his restraints he explains what happened. He says that they were attacked, Gustav was killed by accident and the brigands appeared to regret their actions. He also said that another man, Otto, disappeared just before the attack.
The Vagrant Fellowship spend some time re-organising the tower, returning Watch equipment to weapon racks and laying Gustav to rest, covered in a sheet.
Captain Reinhard Volker arrives with reinforcements, after some discussion the group agree to meet him the next morning at his office. At which point the Vagrant Fellowship head back to town, they spend some time selling off their wares. Vixen Thornlock critically succeeds selling the Ugly Bastard Sword for a lot of money, meanwhile she critically fails when trying to sell the hammer which, it turns out, belongs to the man she is trying to sell it to.
The Vagrant Fellowship decide to stay, and eat, in the The Crooked Eel. They spend a little time looking for any details they can glean about a scrap of cloth they found at the tower with wolfs head emblazoned on it. Vixen fails to charm two drunk men in to giving her more details. Johnny hears someone mention "wolves" but otherwise gains little of signficance.
The party pay for a large shared room, and feel no ill effects from the cheaper food.
The Vagrant Fellowship spend some time buying equipment for the adventure ahead, improving Edgard's armour and weapons. They also meet with Captain Reinhard Volker, at which point he hires them for an undercover mission to deal with the The Grissenwölfin. He suggests that they are group he should have dealt with years ago, when they first arrived but he was blocked from acting by Baron Dietrich von Kalten. Johnny remembers to tell Volker about the missing Otto, at which point he intuites that Volker is suspicious of the story surrounding Otto. Captain Volker tells the party that it would be prudent to check in at the The Broken Blade, but warns the group that there are likely agents of The Grissenwölfin within Grissenwald.
