Death House

After shushing the boy, the girl turns to you and says, "There's a monster in our house!" She then points to a tall brick row house that has seen better days. Its windows are dark. It has a gated portico on the ground floor, and the rusty gate is slightly ajar. The houses on either side are abandoned, their windows and doors boarded up.

Death House is an old luxurious row home in the village of Barovia, notorious among the local populace as being haunted. The house has burned down many times, but rises from the ashes by the evil forces that inhabit it. Whereas the first two floors show no sign of it, it has been abandoned for a long time. The last known inhabitants were the Durst family, a family of lower nobles in the year 341.
The Durst family lead a cult of worshipers of the Dark Powers of Barovia. Their debauchery and acts were well known, but ignored throughout the village out of fear. When Strahd von Zarovich took residence in the valley of Barovia, the cult regarded him as a messiah of their gods. They pledged their devotion to him, but Strahd was not interested in these men he deemed as utterly unworthy of his attention.
The cult withdrew to their base in Death House, maintaining its activities in an effort to impress Strahd. This proved to be their downfall, as one day the cult captured and sacrificed adventurers that Strahd von Zarovich was interested in. It was however not his approval, but his wrath that soon followed, leaving the cultists evermore bound to their cellars.
The Wandering Apocalypse survived the Death House. It still stands there in the misty streets of Barovia, waiting for its next victims.
