Satyrs in The Nix Hive | World Anvil

Satyrs

Satyrs are a large and physically imposing type of Nix. They are known to stalk the wilderness surrounding Nix bases and are very dangerous to human, but much beloved by the Hive.

Morphology

Satyrs have an overall anthropomorphic shape. They are capable of walking on all fours, but do so less than some other castes such as Nixies and Orogs. Satyrs have a masculine appearance with a strong upper body, but are still hermaphrodites like all other Nix. Satyrs look the same as both seelie and unseelie Nix.

1.Antlers, all Satyrs have prominent antlers or horns. 2.Face carapace has a skull like appearance, is often a bone like color as well. 3.Antennae are present, but hidden behind horns. 4.All satyrs have a thick mane, and some amount of fur on their body. 5.Long arms and hands. 6.Two toed feet with large claws gives the appearance of hooves. 7.Sloped back when standing on four legs.

Size

Average height is 8 feet 2 inches tall (2.4 m) with the largest individuals being 10 feet tall ( 3m) and the smallest being 6 feet tall (1.8m)

Other forms

Satyrs are able to shape shift into up to three additional animal forms. Their shape shifting follows the typical methods and rules of Nix shape shifting. Shape shifting is entirely optional, so your Satyr can instead have one, two or no additional forms if you prefer that.

When choosing their forms, Satyrs prefer large, aggressive animals.

Traits

In each category of traits the examples given are only some of the possible shapes and variations for that body part. Feel free to come up with your own variations of each trait.

Head Shape

A Satyrs head is the typical wedge shape found in most Nix. There is a carapace completely covering their face. This carapace is shaped and colored to resemble bone, but is actually insect shell. The coloring of the face is often a neutral color, usually light but blackened bone like coloring is also possible. Nostrils are close together and sunken, further adding to the skull like appearance. The brow and cheeks have distinct ridges on them. The overall shape of the snout, brow and cheeks varies, as does the arrangement of teeth.

Ears

Satyrs are one of the Nix castes that actually do have ears. Their ears are always ungulate like, resembling those of a horse, deer or goat. The ears can still have a wide range or shapes and angles even within these restrictions. Ears may or may not have a fringe of fur along their outer edge.

Antlers

All Satyrs have some kind of antlers or horns. Antlers can vary in size and shape. Their antlers or horns can resemble the antlers and horns of any species (except those species which have horns in the middle of their head like rhinos). Antlers and horns are an extension of the face carapace. They grow smoothly from the top back of the head without a separation line, although the horns can develop ridges like an ibex. Antlers are permanent and do not shed with the seasons.

In addition to the main set of antlers or horns, there can be smaller horns or spikes on various parts of the face.

Antennae

Satyrs do have antennae, just like other Nix. These antennae are located behind the horns and tend to be hard to see because of that. A Satyr's antennae are alway swept backwards, over its mane and neck, but otherwise can be any shape found among Nix antennae.

Mandibles

All Satyrs have mandibles. They're located at the edges of the mouth, under the eyes. Mandibles vary greatly in shape. They can vary in size too.

Eyes

While a Satyr's eyes aren't as large as most Nix, they are still quite large and bulging from the socket. Sclera, pupil and iris are all optional. Eyes can be compound like an insect's. The pupil can be any shape. Any part of the eye can be any color. Individual eyes can be different colors. Satyrs cannot have any more than two large primary eyes. Any additional eyes have to be ocelli and follow the rules pertaining to them.

Ocelli

Ocelli are simple eyes that occur between the compound eyes of insects. Nix can have them too. Nix can have between one and three ocelli. Ocelli can be arranged in any symmetrical way. Ocelli must be smaller than the primary eyes. They can be different sizes compared to each other. Ocelli can be simple, compound or have any combination of pupil, iris and sclera. They can have different design from the main eyes and from each other. Ocelli can be any color, they can be different colors from the main eyes and from each other.

Blue patch is allowable area for ocelli.

Facial Hair

Satyrs can't actually have fur or hair growing on their face shell. However they often have tufts of long fur growing at the edges of their face shell, giving the illusion of facial hair. The V on the underside of their jaw where their jaw shell comes to a point under their chin is an especially common place to have a long tuft resembling a goat's beard. Tufts at the back of their cheeks are also quite common.

Mane

Satyrs always have manes of thick fur on their neck, no exceptions. Mane fur comes in a variety of lengths, shapes and styles, and can be styled and dyed like hair.

1.long, 2.short, 3.varied length, 4.extra shaggy 5.Styled

Tail

Just like other Nix castes, Satyrs have an insect like abdomen for a tail. This abdomen contains some of their organs, and there for has to be thick and rounded. While the tail can vary in shape to a degree, long whip like tails or little stubs are not allowed. There's always some amount of fur covering the top side of the tail. Amounts of tail fur can vary greatly, including being fully furred.

Body Covering

All Satyrs have some amount of fur on their bodies. The amount can vary considerably, from being completely covered in fur, to just having a patch of fur over their backs and on their thighs. Even when a Satyr is completely covered in fur their faces, hands and feet are fur free, although fur can extend further down their arms and legs then other Nix castes. The areas of their body not covered in fur can have any combination of skin or insect shell, or be completely covered in one or the other. The insect shell can have any division patterns between shell pieces, so long as the joins still function normally.

1.Shell cover, 2.Fully furred, 3.Spikes, 4.Minimum amount of fur coverage

Wings

Satyrs are rarely winged. When they do have wings they're always either gossamer insect wings or moth wings, never cute butterfly wings. Having beetle shells is also exceedingly rare, but does occur.

Extra Arms

Satyrs can have one additional pair of arms. These must be arms, not legs. The arms can be located either on the back of the shoulders, or under the main set of arms. Please note, the shoulder arms cannot be combined with wings, as they exist in the same location. Secondary arms under the main arms can be combined with wings. Only one additional set of arms is allowed, Nix are insects, not spiders.

When walking on all fours, shoulder arms are held up above the body and arms-under-the-primary-arms make contact with the ground like the primary arms.

Satyrs can also have any of their hands replaced with mantis scythes. This is most common on the shoulder arms, but can happen on any arms. The mantis scythes have two fingers before the large blade digit. When the mantis scythe is on the primary arms the Satyrs walks on these two fingers when they're on all fours.

Satyrs cannot have duplicates of other body parts, such as extra head, tails, antennae, mandibles and so forth.

Scars and Past Injuries

Satyrs can have scars and signs of past injuries. They're not likely to have missing limbs or eyes, as Nix have the technology to replace them with cloned limbs, although they can have a scar where a new limb has been attached. Scars on skin should have a faint greenish hew to them, instead of pink or red like on humans, owing to Nix's copper blood. Scars and scratches on shell should be a similar color to the shell, unless the scar goes all the way through to the flesh.

Behavior

Satyrs act as guards, protecting the location of the base, as well as protecting smaller Nix when outside. Satyrs are not the only caste who does guard duty, as Orogs also help with guarding. However Satyrs are guard specialists, while Orogs are designed for both offence and defense.

Satyrs are only found near Nix bases. While Nix bases can sometimes be found near secluded towns and villages, the majority are deep in the wilderness. Satyrs will not leave their post while on duty, unless to chase a target out of the area. When they're off duty Satyrs will return inside the hive, they don't feel any need to roam away from home. Even without traveling through it, Satyrs have excellent knowledge of the landscape around the base, which they gain through the hive mind, from the travels of other Nix.

When Satyrs do encounter a human intruder they will try to scare the human out of the area before resorting to violence to remove them. This isn't done out of any concern for the human. Instead a human running back to the others telling wild stories about monsters in the forest is less likely to be believed then a fight that leaves behind injuries on the human and evidence at the location. However if just scaring an intruder doesn't work the Satyrs won't hesitate to use violence. They will kill their target quickly and then eat the body to hide it. Often they will scatter the remaining clothing and belongings for miles around the area, sometimes taking random items back to the base with them.

When first encountering an intruder Satyrs will stalk them through the forest for quite a a while before resorting to jumping out and revealing their presence. Usually just the feeling of being followed is enough to make a human leave the area. Satyrs are also able to make infrasound vocalizations at 19Hz, which adds to an intruder's feeling of unease and desire to leave. Satyrs are very good at moving about with stealth, even without using Nix technology like the cloaking cape, which they have access to. If you glimpse a satyr, or even feel like something is following you and making you uneased, it's because they want you to know they're there. Satyrs are also very aware of their surroundings and near impossible to sneak up on.

Satyrs are considered to be highly attractive to the other Nix. This is in spite of their caste not often having wings, which is usually considered an attractive feature. Because of this attractiveness and because of their physical strength and imposing stature, Satyrs are one of the higher ranking castes. While Satyrs were not originally created to be thirst traps they have fully embraced this role in the hive. Satyrs are especially amourous in the Hive and often have large harems. When not on guard duty Satyrs are usually engaging in some form of lustful activities with the other Nix.

Out of boredom, or a dislike for humans, Satyrs will occasionally capture human victims. These captives will then be tortured by various means. This is in spite of their duties to chase humans away and guard the base from them. Although Satyrs have no intention of allowing these captives to escape alive. Satyrs treat their captives as toys rather than living beings and have little concern for their well being. If a Satyr's captive isn't killed for fun, or through abusive play, then the Satyr will eventually kill them out of boredom and no longer wanting to keep them.

Out of all the Nix castes, Satyrs are one of the few that are openly hostile to humans, even when they're seelie (instead of just dangerously negligent). Out of all the Nix, Satyrs are the ones you least want to run into in the forest.
