Shades of the Past
General Summary
Several weeks had passed since the party’s last encounter. Tidran, Dante, and Farren decided to build huts in Beyonders Blade and they enlisted the help of the town carpenter, Fabian. Tidran wanted to surprise Cassandra with a comfortable dwelling, and paid for a worker to turn the basic hut into a more comfortable cottage. Dante had dreams of a grandiose house which could also double as a meeting place and asked Fabian to help him work on it throughout the upcoming weeks.
Meanwhile, Sirkel was busy cooking up (and eating!) a bunch of food because he was hungry and he never knew when he would be busy and need food reserves. Mo was occupied elsewhere and Cassandra had gone to see Gwydeon because her crystals were bothering her again.
Breaker was near the inn when a messenger arrived from Northam and asked for Constable Toby. Breaker directed the messenger to Toby, and when the messenger returned Breaker asked if there was anything for him. The messenger handed a scroll to Breaker and also advised him that Toby had a message about assassins which Breaker might want to hear.
Breaker quickly found Toby and inquired about the assassins. Toby said the message was from Constable Reeves of Northam, and warned that an assassin had been captured in the area and for people to be on the lookout. Furthermore, a bounty was offered for anyone who caught any more assassins who might still be lurking around. Toby directed further inquiries to Constable Reeves.
Breaker sought out the other party members and implored them to join him on the quest for the assassins. However, he found that most of them were averse to hunting people for money and it was only after much cajoling and promising to take them alive that Dante, Farren, and Sirkel reluctantly agreed to at least accompany him to Northam for more information. Tidran however did not join the rest; he instead offered to help Hagar, a merchant who needed a negotiator.
Tidran spoke with Hagar about what the job entailed. Hagar explained he was in charge of opening up a new trade route for synth wood. He was worried because the man in charge of the small hamlet was a shrewd negotiator and Hagar was inexperienced and agreeable. Tidran agreed to accompany Hagar and negotiate a profitable price for the synth wood.
Once Tidran and Hagar arrived at the hamlet, they met Bolduc who was in charge of setting a price for the synth wood. Just as Hagar had warned, Bolduc was indeed a shrewd and greedy negotiator. Tidran however held his own, and the price negotiations went on into the early evening. Finally, as they appeared to become deadlocked, Bolduc offered the pair to spend the night and consider their position.
Hagar and Tidran spent the night, and while chatting with one of the villagers they learned that Bolduc had a weakness for rare cologne made from drebil oil. Crucially they also learned that drebil oil was rare and Bolduc did not have a steady supply of it.
In the morning, Tidran again bartered price with Bolduc but this time offered to supply the hamlet with drebil oil in exchange for more favorable prices. Bolduc wavered at the mention of the drebil oil, and Tidran pressed his new advantage. Bolduc finally agreed to a fair price in exchange for a steady supply of his favorite cologne. Now the only issue was to procure some drebils!
Meanwhile, Breaker, Dante Sirkel, and Farren arrived at Northam and wasted no time finding Constable Reeves. The constable informed them the assassin was captured about a week’s journey away and had a drawing of a broad shouldered, heavily armored man carrying a large slug-thrower. This man was assumed to be the assassin’s target because the assassin wouldn’t say anything after being captured. Hearing this description, Breaker seemed suddenly very driven to seek out the assassin for direct questioning.
The group stocked up on needed supplies from the abundance of merchants in Northam and rented Aneens for their journey. They planned to find the assassin and hunt down any companions he might have in the area. When they were about a day’s journey out of town, a messenger delivered a scroll from Tidran. He was back at the settlement and needed their help hunting debrils! After a brief debate, they agreed to help Tidran although Breaker was worried about the delay.
The whole group finally arrived back at Beyonders Blade and Cassandra joined them as well. They then set out to an area of the Beyond rumored to be frequented by the elusive and deadly creatures. After much poking at tree stumps and rocks, Cassandra finally perceived several debril hiding in a boulder field. Dante blasted at them with his hand shooters, and the fight was on!
The debrils fought back hard, but the group finally triumphed and the pressed the debril corpses to obtain the valuable oil. Tidran gave Hagar his share, and there was enough oil left for each party member to get a small vial of it. Seeing as how the entire group came back to help him, Tidran agreed to accompany the group in return and look for the assassin.
