Session #23
General Summary
The party pushed onwards and found another village they suspected had been overrun by Shiverns. This village had hundreds of abandoned glow globes and burned out bonfires, as though the village had suddenly had a need for as much light as possible. There were several newly dug graves; one had a wood slab on it which mentioned its occupant had “been slashed to death in the darkness which would not light”. The team decided to exhume the body, and discovered the same slash marks as on the librarian. Additionally, many of the slash marks appeared to be posthumous. The shiverns had returned after the slaughter and continued to slash the victims.
While discussing this disturbing turn of events, the group was waylaid by a dozen Gazers. Switching to ranged attacks to deal with the flying menace, the gazers were dealt a handy defeat by the adventurers. As they scoured the wreckage of the gazers, the party found shins and etched on one was “Lt. Slade”.
Suddenly, they heard a soft moaning from the brush just outside the abandoned village. Bane activated his invisibility cloak and carefully went to investigate. He found a man tied up and showing signs of injuries. The group was very suspicious of how anyone had survived the attack at the village. Nielsa provided some healing to the man, and Ephyra gave him some food, but the group left him tied up. The man, Spike, provided some details of the attack and wanted to cook his special recipe for the party as thanks for his rescue. Everyone in the party was too paranoid to allow Spike to cook for them, but decided to follow up on his tip about a cave nearby where the attackers had camped.
Nearby, they found the cave and sent Bane with his invisibility cloak in to investigate. Once inside, he found a rope bridge across a huge chasm. At this point, the rest the party re-joined Bane inside the cave. Despite their trepidations, the entire party successfully crossed the rickety bridge without incident.
However, as soon as the last person was across the bridge, it was cut from the entrance. Spike had slipped his bonds and cut the bridge! Spike taunted the group and slipped back into the darkness, his laugh echoing back to the adventurers. It didn’t take long for the group to realize just how fully evil Spike’s trap was. While discussing which way to go, they were attacked by a Gemorrn!
The party gamely fought back, but were horrified to discover the monstrosity was impervious to all physical attacks. The Gemorrn battered the adventures with wave after wave of psychic assault. Kae with his nano abilities was able to return some psychic attacks, and do some slight damage, but the entire party was quickly becoming overwhelmed.
With quick thinking, Ephyra handed one end of a rope to Tobeon and levitated back across the chasm. Adaelia attempted to run across the rope but slipped and dangled precariously above the bottomless chasm. Tobeon held on grimly despite being near death, if his grip faltered Adaelia would die.
Bane used his connection with his longtime friend Irond to send a plea for help. Irond heard Bane’s call and sensed the situation was dire. Irond quickly teleported into the cave and he psychically assaulted the gemorrn, causing the energy discharge to flicker and sputter.
Adaelia found an inner strength and pulled herself back on top the rope and ran across it to safety. Bane then grabbed Tobeon and the rope and pushed both of them over the edge, swinging down to the other side. The rope twisted in mid-air, and Bane smacked face first into the opposite cliff side. Tobeon was fortunate enough to use Bane as a big cushion and avoided any more damage.
Irond grabbed the rest of the party still in danger and teleported them back across the chasm to safety. Bane and Tobeon climbed up the rope, and so everyone was finally out of range of the Gemorrn.
Despite significant injuries, the party tracked down Spike and confronted him. Spike's poisoned daggers got the best of Ephyra, who slumped over from her inuries and became impaired. Despite his ferocious speed, Spike was outmatched by the group, but tried one final trick to break loose. His caustic smoke capsule caused about half the group to gag and lose concentration, but the other half held him firm.
Having finally captured Spike, the group camped once more to nurse their injuries.
