Mo, a Graceful Jack who Controls Gravity

My heart leaped with excitement.

As I ran the arduous terrain, the sands shifted, the ground trembled, my moving feet skimmed the ground, I looked up and saw The Twisted Spire. Then quickly scanned around assuring my feet followed the correct safe path and… the ground opened from beneath me. A curse came to mind and under my breath I almost uttered it. I was falling headfirst into a giant chasm. I sighed, once again if it weren’t for my ability, I’d be dead. I let myself fall; time was almost slow as I observed the sand falling like waterfalls from the edges of this enormous gaping mouth. I turned so my back would face the endless sea bellow me, closed my eyes and slowed my descent. One breath, the sand falling with me slowed and floated around me. Two breaths, my hair found its way around my face hovering, obscuring the light. Three, the sea of organic matter around me thrummed and twitched with excitement at the prospect of it’s new capture. The smell of sulfur swelled in the air. I guess its time to go home again, I thought to myself disappointed. I aimed myself towards one of the hot updrafts and floated out of the growing, churning chasm. It seemed almost grieved, like it was angry at me for defying the primary law that ruled it, Gravity. I flew so high the chasm looked no bigger than a ripple in the crust of the fields.

On my slow decent to a safe patch of land I argued with myself. There must be something I can do to aid in my training. Trying to survive this land was going to be more difficult than I’d first realized. I’d been trying to reach the Twisted Spire for weeks, at least I’d seen it this time. But then again, I’d need to do more than just reach it. I’d need to survive, thrive! There was no time, I’d need to run away by the end of this week. In a week’s time I’d be 23, The Age of Inheritance. I couldn’t allow that to happen, I wouldn’t allow it! An angry hot tear rolled down my cheek as I finally graced land and turned a jogging into a quick run. I fell into a rhythm, ignoring my burning legs and taunt chest. Faster, focusing on each footstep home, trying to avoid… A burst of boiling liquid shot out in front of me, the geyser like spray shooting the local living organisms known as Ligoshi into the sky where they would float for several hours and then somehow bleed back into the malleable fields. They were ethereal, slow moving and incredibly dangerous, I avoided them but nearly fell into a pool of liquid. They were difficult to avoid, while having to keep constant tabs on the ground. There were many of them, but I managed to reach my home updraft and I was propelled up. Relief hit me and then overwhelming shame, how am I going to achieve my goals? I reached The Flying City of Ivannia and was hit by a hum of busy sounds. It was mid afternoon and everyone and their maidservants were out and about gathering food and doing errands. The smell of fungi traced the air, and fruit zest tickled my nose. I walked through the city, lined the buildings even, but I refused to hover and thus attracted many a stare from ongoing members of society. Ivannia was a superior city, we elevated ourselves quite literally to grow and not have to deal with The Amorphous Fields. The local aeon priests an era ago had developed a harness technology, inspired by their leaders that allows quite literally every person to hover everywhere they went. Its utterly ridiculous, how are you supposed to maintain a strong physique if you never walk anywhere or do any form of physical activity? The average Ivannian as a result was quite pudgy. I looked around but it didn’t seem that someone was following me, even up here my eyes trailed the floor.

Suddenly, I was caught by a guard who was shocked after having grabbed my arm and pulling my hood. I quickly placed my hand to his mouth. “Just Mo, please” He smiled as a loving father would at a mischievous child. “Mo, welcome home. Where did you go this time?” I dusted myself off straightening up my attire as the guard amusingly listened to my story. He was easily 6 foot and hovered, so I felt dwarfed, I walked along side him all the way home. Before turning me into the gated entryway he lifted my chin and I saw as he shot me a guilty knowing look. But the doors were already locked, and he had turned before I could inquire.

I was greeted with a bath, which I took gracefully, scrubbing off shame and dust, organic slime and smells. It was warm most likely because of its position, near the hearth. When I was finished, I slid my lanky 5”10 frame into my chemise, petticoats and one of the silk gowns laid out for me. I brushed out and braided my black hip length hair and put on my golden jewels, I hated to admit it, but they did look pretty, matching with the color of my eyes. These frivolities were so annoyingly domestic. I rolled my eyes and then I took a long breath in and out and walked gracefully into the main eating area for dinner.

I blinked finally looking up. There stood, not seated, every single relative I knew. Even my 400 lbs aunt, which was astounding. My hands grew cold and moist. I sat in the only seat available, the last one at the head of the table. Once I was seated everyone else sat in unison as the plates were brought out for dinner. What in the frozen fields is going on? This is incredibly creepy… My parents were seated near me, both avoiding my desperate inquiring glare.

“Today is the day of inheritance” my uncle breathed softly. My world spun out of control. Was it? I could have sworn it was next week. My heart leaping bounds in my chest I opened my mouth to speak but was interrupted. “I know how much you look forward to this” my uncle’s eyes begged me to go along and silence my childish petty ways. Tears welled up in my eyes and I ran. I almost brought the tablecloth with me and my glass and fork fell to the floor, the glass shattering. As I left the room the doors clanked behind me and I heard “ it's a lot, I’m sure she’s just feeling overwhelmed, she will inherit well…” the last word but a whisper as I ran the fastest I could to my rooms. I gathered a small pack and my cloak and hopped out the window hovering down to the amorphous field. As I floated down in the night I peered at the tower, which had been my home all my life. “goodbye” I whimpered, then steadied myself turned and didn’t look back.
