Green Ray

Green Rays are large social omnivores, living a life of travel. Their pointy mouthparts can dart forward in an instant, and pierce almost any hide, though these creatures swim rather slowly in comparison. They can also avoid confrontations by simply laying flat on the seabed, gathering foliage with their mouthparts beforehand to cover their backsides with. At the first sign that a threat has passed, they will dart away from their hiding places.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Green Ray features a wide, flat body with smooth scales. Their wings are smooth and streamlined, and their thick tails are nearly as long as their body, featuring a taper at the end. Two of its eyes are larger than the others, and are fixed at an upward angle, positioned right above the sharp protrusions in their mouths.

Biological Traits

Male rays will have larger bodies, and sharper and longer mouthparts, though not larger by much.

Genetics and Reproduction

Male individuals of this species are known to swim up against a female when meeting one, attempting to impress her with various flirtatious behaviors. If he gets chosen by the female, he will get to start the next generation, and if not, he gets violently chased off. Mother Green Rays will lay their eggs on the father's back, swimming close above to protect them, while the father merely has to keep them from falling off on his travels.

Growth Rate & Stages

Baby Green Rays will stick close to their parents, as they are virtually defenseless on their own. With time, their sharp mouthparts will start to grow, and become much more viable to use. They mainly learn from their parents on how to use them for self defense. Once they get old enough, they'll still stick close to their parents to form a protective school, but some may risk it out in the open to mate with another of its kind and start a new school. There, they'll spend a lot of time attempting to camouflage themselves on the seabed with their flat bodies.

Ecology and Habitats

Green Rays are only found in the Forests, and mainly spend their time high above the sea floor, but sometimes they'll take brief periods of rest on the ground. They can easily camouflage themselves on the ground, with their flat anatomy and ability to lie completely still. Otherwise, they'll travel all over their environment, in any type of region where a meal can be found.

Dietary Needs and Habits

These rays will mostly feed on the Seaweed Clusters and Nightlight Pods, but they'll also eat fresh corpses if they can, mostly from the Petrazoans. Though, they may also hunt certain live creatures from time to time. They use their sharp mouthparts to make quick incisions in the carcass's surface, only feeding on the insides. For the Nightlight Pod, they rip them from the ground by stabbing their mouthparts into the sides, and swimming straight up until it dislodges from its roots. Then, they'll push the pod against a hard surface over and over again until it cracks open.

Additional Information

Social Structure

When a family is first started, they will stick together to form a school, solely to defend themselves with sheer numbers. Their preferred form of defense to is to gather in a tight formation, with one member in front to give most of the attacks, and to take the most blows. Over time, the schools will often diminish, as some of the young will leave in search of another Green Ray out in the wild. These two will then mate and form their own schools with their young. In rare cases, if a group of unrelated rays happen to find each other at once, then they may form a school together, with several families being started soon after.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Green Ray's eyesight functions rather well, and is its main method of sensing the environment. Half of the time, they hardly need make use of their hearing or smell.
