Abominable Crab

The Abominable Crab is a large crustacean inhabiting the heavily forested areas of its habitat, often residing in large dens in clearings and caves in the plant growth. These crabs are only slightly hostile towards one another, usually only brawling over a meal. They also make a deep rumbling sound towards their mates in order to communicate with them, keeping track of them or alerting them of danger.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Abominable Crabs have large bulky bodies, covered in a thick exoskeleton, and a white hairy coat. Their arms are long and almost completely covered in the hair, with large robust claws at the end. Their heads are small in comparison to their bodies, with two large feeding appendages, surrounded by a thick layer of hair at the base of the neck. These creatures also have two thin antennae, and a large paddle-like tail.

Genetics and Reproduction

When two crabs meet, they have a slim chance of not attempting to tear each other's heads off at first, but some may even fight each other in order to mate. The two will engage in a short brawl, where they aim their large claws at each other's heads, while also grabbing their opponent's arms and pushing them back. These brawls end once one becomes too exhausted to continue, and will be forced to mate with the victor in order to pass on their strength. The eggs are hidden in the territory of the one who loses the brawl, safe guarded in a hole in the ground, made from the parents digging their claws into the ground.

Growth Rate & Stages

Newborn Abominable Crabs start out crammed together on their mother's back, lacking their white hairs at first. The father will go off hunt in order to feed the family, leaving the mother by herself with her offspring. Sometimes the young will leave the safety of their mother's shell in order to relax on the seabed, preparing for when they have to leave for good. As they get older, their hairs will start growing in, and they'll begin hunting their own food, which mainly consists of small fish and arthropods found on the seabed. As adults, the young will leave their family to find their own territory to settle in.

Ecology and Habitats

These crabs can be found in the Forests, and spend most of their time crawling over the seabed searching for either a meal or a piece of land to claim as their own. These territories are often located in or near caves, and mostly serve as a place of rest in between hunts, meaning some will leave behind many of the territories they make in their lifetime. Some of these crabs have also been seen hollowing out sections of the large ground roots in their habitat in order to make their territories.

Dietary Needs and Habits

These crabs are mostly scavengers, and their preferred food items are Megafin Squid, Scythe Lobster, and Pacific Men O' War. Sometimes, they will take to actively hunting prey, either venturing through the wilderness to find it or waiting in a cave for something to ignorantly crawl inside. When scavenging, they often get into tense disputes with other predators over a kill.

Biological Cycle

Their hair swill naturally dull due to dirt and algae patches sticking to it, leaving many to make a habit of cleaning themselves off to look impressionable for potential mates.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their eyes are very small compared to the rest of their bodies, but they are well-equipped for survival, as well as the hairs on their arms. It is thought that the hairs on their bodies can detect objects well before the crab can, quickly alerting it of any small creature that may have crawled on.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Certain newborn creatures may stay nestled inside this creature's hair for protection, namely the baby Petrazoans and Lathradons. Abominable Crabs will attempt to brush them off with their claws, but there are certain places they cannot reach due to their restrictive exoskeletons.
