Bastion War College

The Bastion War College is an academic institution dedicated to teaching military history and military science both to civilians and to up and coming military cadets, particularly for the Bastion System itself. It is one of the premier academic institutions for these disciplines in the galaxy rivaled only by the best state academies of the Union of Sol. The Bastion War College is responsible for developing the methods of Ship Classification used by most interstellar naval treaties. The Bastion War College is also host to a number of military exchange programs, primarily those operated by SASO, though the college itself does not take a particular stance in the ideological conflicts within the galaxy.

Structure

The Bastion War College is an academic institution with few pretenses to any other sort of activity. It is divided into a handful of schools that cater to specific majors and minors, and is largely divided along the lines of civilian/military education.
College of Military History: A college dedicated to teaching the military history of humanity from the earliest known records of Old Earth, to the Jred Scourge, and modern conflicts in its aftermath. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies for majors in Astropolitics and International Relations, Ancient Terran Military History, Age of Unity Counterinsurgency Studies, Jred War History, and Modern Conflicts among other more specific curricula, particularly among doctoral studies.
College of the Military Sciences: The largest of the colleges, the College of Military Sciences, dedicated to teaching the modern military sciences. The College is most famous for its development of the modern standards of naval Ship Classification. It also offers courses in military engineering. The College of Military Sciences has degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level for Planetary Strategy and Logistics, Counterinsurgency Strategy, Feral Warfare Studies, Transatmospheric Warfare Strategy, Naval Strategy and Logistics, Terrestrial Military Engineering, Naval Engineering, Robotic Warfare Studies, and Military Robotic Engineering, among other more specialized studies.
Bastion Military Academy: The Bastion Military Academy is a strictly military institution dedicated to training military officers for the Bastion System Forces, as well as hosting exchange programs for officers from throughout the galaxy. It is broadly considered one the finest military academies in the known galaxy. The Bastion War College is famously neutral in most astropolitical affairs, and is willing to host officer cadets from states as diverse as the Republic of Istengrav and the Democratic Republic of Yuanjing.

Culture

The Bastion War College promotes heterodox military thought, believing that novel approaches to warfare, and independence among officer cadets will produce better results than strictly enforcing Orthodoxy. Students, especially those that are studying as officer cadets are expected to be creative thinkers who are willing to collaborate to develop theses that they can defend rigorously. They also breed a sense of independence and accountability to ensure that the graduates they turn out are capable of acting well on their own or integrating into any but the most rigid command structures with ease.

Public Agenda

The Bastion War College’s aims are simple. They seek to train the most astute military scholars in the galaxy. The college cares not whether its students are civilian or military nor do they care about who they teach so long as they perform while at the college. The College generally promotes these aims with the overarching goal of hoping that a populace well educated on the military histories and sciences will be more inclined to understand war as a tool to achieve political ends where other tools have failed, and to ensure that wars are as quick, and hopefully, as bloodless as possible.

Assets

The primary assets of the Bastion War College are its large body of talented professors, and the college itself. The Bastion War College trains some of the best military scholars in the known galaxy, many of whom eventually return to the college to teach this cycle ensures that the College has a strong institutional memory and is much more effective in teaching future generations. The College itself is also one of the most valuable properties on the planet Bastion, with three main buildings, dozens of smaller class buildings, and hundreds of major and minor facilities for practical studies. It has one of the most extensive libraries on military history, often called the “Alexandria of Conflict” in the form of the Deepak Chaudhary Memorial Library. Its facilities are well defended with anti ship batteries (which conveniently are used for training purposes when not defending the college) and a modest, though surprisingly well armed security force.

History

The Bastion War College was founded in the later days of the Age of Unity by the Stellar League as an additional military training institution closer to the rebellious worlds in the Nueve Lorraine Sector. This facility, essentially a soft power outpost of the Sol Sector Forces, was placed to ensure the loyalty of the worlds of the Sector by providing access to the Sol Sector recruitment pipeline, and lucrative jobs for the peoples of the Neuve Lorraine Sector. It was also, of course, a training facility with some of the finest talent imported to the world. The Bastion War College, though initially just a military facility, did eventually allow civilians to access some of the less possibly dangerous curricula and facilities shortly before the Jred Scourge.
During the Jred Scourge, the War College was forcibly remilitarized as the needs of the war became increasingly taxing on the manpower of the Stellar League. Officers trained here were often well regarded, well above those of the other local Sector Academies and those who survived more than a short stint on the front were eventually cycled back to teach more new cadets, further ensuring that the quality of instruction remained as high as possible for the Bastion War College. In the latter days of the Jred Scourge, the academy itself came under threat of Jred attack as the Bastion System was invaded by the Jred shortly before the scourging of Earth. However, thanks in no small part due to the effort of college personnel, and college trained personnel, the Bastion System became one of the few systems in the entire galaxy to not only repel the more aggressive Jred, but actually clear out the infestation of Jred entirely. The War College was also one of the few military institutions outside the Sol Sector to survive the Great Cataclysm relatively intact thanks to the fact that many of its various treatises were stored on traditional books as well as dataslates and data crystals.
In the years following the Jred Scourge, the Bastion War College would eventually train the nucleus of officers that would take power and restore order to the Bastion system during the Long Night. Though the new state in Bastion would make a few attempts to formally seize control of the War College, the College itself maintained its independence, eventually negotiating for complete control of its affairs so long as a certain number of Bastion’s citizens would be allowed to train there as military cadets. Since then the College was steadily expanded to become one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the known galaxy, and one of the most popular destinations for those seeking to refine the art of war.
