Radstag Species in The New California Republic | World Anvil

Radstag

The Radstag is a mutation from what used to be the California Mule Deer. Radstag typically flourishes in the more easterly part of the New California Republic in the Foothills and Mountains but they can also be found along the hills and mountain ranges of the San Andreas. Radstags don't typically venture too close to heavily populated areas unless food or water becomes scarce in their own Territory.   Radstags are typically larger than Typical California Deer often standing close to 5 feet at the shoulder. While they retain a mostly unchanged form in that their body remains deer-like and they sport antlers, they suffer the same mutation as brahmin in having two heads. The inner eye of each head is blind, requiring the radstag to navigate using both heads. Like brahmin, both heads can move independently. The other strange mutation that is very apparent is the additional two legs that hang undeveloped from the front of the creature’s chest. While the radstag can bend these legs when needed for comfort, such as when laying down, they are otherwise useless. While radstags still retain a coat, it is often mangey in places from radiation, and rabid radstags often lose their coat in places. These creatures travel in packs and are usually docile unless threatened.   Their Hides make Excellent leather and their Meat is a welcome source of Protein to many a wasteland Survivor.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Radstags typically have 4 hooved legs and one head but some due to mutation have been known to 5-6 legs and even two heads.

Genetics and Reproduction

Rutting season occurs in the Nuclear Fall when the Female Radstag comes into estrus for a period lasting 2-3 weeks. Males exhibit extremely aggressive behavior in competing for mates. The Females begin estrus again if they do not become pregnant. The gestation period is about 200 days, with Newborn fawns arriving in the spring; the young remain with mothers throughout the heat of summer and are weaned in the Nuclear Fall.

Ecology and Habitats

Generally, the Radstag has a preference for hill terrain, especially an oak woodland habitat. It is a browser and typically takes over 90% of its diet from shrubs and leaves and the balance from grasses.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Radstag usually browse close to lakes or streams providing their water. From that water source, they may roam 1-6 mi, and typically make their beds in grassy areas beneath trees within such a two-mile radius from both water and forage. Repeatedly used beds often are scratched to a nearly level surface, about 2 m in diameter. Less regularly used bedding areas are seen as flattened grass. On hot summer days, Radstags often seek shade and rest in the midday and refuge from Nuclear Rainstorms.   In summer, Radstags mainly browse on leaves of small trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, but also consume many types of berries. They Only Venture Closer to civilization if there is a shortage of food or water in their home territory.

Behaviour

Radstag Males tend to be protective of their herd they will be especially aggressive during rutting season. Very often The Dominant males stand outside the parameter of the herd to protect the rest. The Older and larger a male gets the more territorial he will become. Most Female Radstag and their young Are skittish and will bolt or run at loud natural sounds as a protective response. while Males may Perk up and try to seek out the sound to defend the herd unless injured or feeling threatened by something superior to them.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Radstags have a keen sense of smell and hearing making them difficult to sneak up on especially when upwind of the beasts.
