Glittergreen is the name of the powdered, processed, and purified holfin crystal. These crystals are only found in the Greenholt mountains of The Reaches. They are exclusively mined by Altemen since no other intelligent beings can stand to be in the mountains for long. The twisted magic of the region causes other intelligent people to go mad or become physically ill to the point of death if they are not removed from the area.
A large variety of dangerous magical animals roam the mountains as well, making any expedition there very dangerous even with out the harmful effects of the region's magic.
The Altmen mine and export the crystal from the mountains and it is processed into the powder known as Glitergreen, the process is expensive and painstaking and yields only a small amount of usable powder per weight of crystal.
Impure or improperly processed Glitergreen is pretty, but useless.
Proper Glittergreen has a variety of magical uses, but by far its most important is as a magical capacitor of sorts, when bonded with living, organic tissue. This has given rise to its most popular use as a medium for magical protection tattoos. Once introduced into the skin in a magical glyph pattern, or sigil, the fresh tattoo is exposed to a very specific wave length of light, activating its ability to draw in and concentrate lotret or free magic present in the very air of Rit.
Rich families often have protective tattoos etched upon babies not long after they are born, protecting them from evil or assassination in some cases.
Attempting to get more than two Glittergreen tattoos will cancel out the magic altogether as the tattoos begin to draw magic from each other. There is no record of anyone successfully having more than two Glittergreen tattoos.
