Attendant to a God

With the disappearance of the Gods from the mortal realm, the need for Attendants for the Gods, of course ended. Many mortals who had been in training for years, most since a very young age, suddenly found themselves without a purpose.   The duties, training and abilities for attendants for each God, were of course varied and unique to the God in who's service each attendant found itself.  There were general requirements for skills in administration and organization as well as a general knowledge of running a staff of any size from 1 to several hundred.  There were also specific requirements for specific Gods depending on that God's penchants and behaviors.    Some of the Gods needed attendants who could adventure with them into dangerous situations and battles with Demons and the Beasts controlled or created by them.  There were also Gods who just needed someone to help organize their colanders, assist with planning, disseminate information to the other Gods and their servants. The tasks assigned to each Attendant were unique according to the God served.   Almost all Attendants began their training while very young, most between the ages of 6 to 8 turns. Cities and large towns had training centers where parents would bring their children to train in the hopes they would some day be chosen to server as Attendant to a God. Those that did well were eventually sent to the training centers set up by the Gods near their fortresses and estates. The gods would visit these centers often, scouting for a mortal who might eventually serve as their Attendant.

Career

Qualifications

A mortal of outstanding character and devotion to the Gods.  Attendant candidates must be volunteers.  Every candidate chosen must pass the Test of Touch which would determine if the candidate possessed, or was touched by any Demon energy.  Most importantly, the candidate must be chosen by the God they will serve.  This choice is a very personal one to each God and it is often a mystery to mortals why one is chosen and another left behind.

Career Progression

Initial training is done in the lower training facilities in almost all larger cities and towns, the candidates in these schools are typically 6 to 13 turns of age.  Those who pass the various tests and want to continue are eventually sent to the facilities.  Candidates are sent forward to these facilities at the discretion of headmasters and headmistresses of the lower schools according to their talents, not age.   Candidates train in the God's facilities until they are 30 turns of age.  If they are not chosen by a God to serve as an Attendant by then, then are sent to be city administrators, liaisons to the Gods at temples or choose a different career altogether.   Candidates that are chosen can be chosen for a variety of Attendant positions with their God, the most prestigious of which is Personal Attendant to their God. Attendants of other positions are sometimes promoted to Personal Attendant when the post is vacated by its previous Attendant.

Payment & Reimbursement

While in primary training there is no compensation for candidates.  Once accepted in to the God's training facilities, the candidates worldly needs are provided for by the training facility as well as a modest stipend for incidentals.  If chosen, a candidate is compensated by the God directly and the amount is always a very tidy sum, enough to set the Attendant up for life as well as his immediate family.  Death of an Attendant is always followed by the God gifting the family with large sums of money and other goods.
