Askr Einarrson

Askr Einarrson (a.k.a. The Reckless)

Eldest son of the late Jarl Einarr Hàkonson and warrior following the teachings of Ancient Kravaer. An explorer at heart, he dreams of exploring the uncharted waters to the West.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Tall and robust, Askr is covered in various scars and old wounds from his pillaging days.

Facial Features

Sharp angular features, long scar above the place where his right eye should be. Two scars on his left jaw crossing over left cheek. Brown eyes, scruffy full beard and shoulder length ash blonde hair cut haphazardly. A single plait of hair tied by a copper ring against left side of face.

Special abilities

Many are the Midlanders that have heard of the Berserkers and the Skald of the North. Though little are those that have heard of the Unbreakables. Askr has learned the way of these fearsome warriors of indomitable will, of those that cannot be stopped once they set their mind on something. No trial is too great to prevent the Unbreakable Warrior from reaching their goal.

Apparel & Accessories

Usually seen wearing a thick red wool and dark fur cloak tied by an iron pin against his left shoulder. Blue and red linen tunic with wide leather belt. Wears a simple pendant of Antheus against his chest.

Personal history

Born in the harsh winter of northern Kravaer to Einarr Hàkonson, Jarl of the Isle of Þrýsýr. As the first born, he was the next in line to become Jarl after his father's passing. Until he was 10 years old, he was trained to be a leader and protector of the farmlands of Þrýsýr, of the people living there. A dilligent child, Askr lived to accomplish the task he had been appointed with, that of leading his people and make them prosper through the harsh weather of the far North. He'd often be found studying silently in a corner of the Ruler's Hall, ignoring requests to come out and play with his peers. The only time he'd interact with other children would be when they were play-fighting, in order to hone his skills in battle.   Upon his father's passing, seeing how the then 10 years old child was much too young to take the mantle of Jarl yet, his uncle took charge of the lands. Egil Hàkonson never really liked Askr, seeing him as too much trouble, a child that couldn't be easily swayed into doing what he wanted him to do. Too critical, too sharp-witted and able to read one's true intentions with a glance. With this in mind, the Jarl announced that young Askr would be sent on a boat, sailing to far-off shores. Egil had told his retainers that this was all in order to transform the little hatchling into a proper warrior that would be able to defend his lands one day. Experiencing the joys of exploration, as Antheus had intended, was something every future Jarl should experience before being tied down to his lands.    He had been supposed to be gone for a year, but bad weather and trouble had found the raiders and delayed their return home. It seemed like every time they should have turned around, they would instead push forward. The warriors saying that if they kept going, they would eventually come back richer than ever, that he'd make his family proud. Though much too young to be killing men in their wars, a sword was put in his hands and he was told that he could either kill or be killed. Countless were those that were felled by his blade. Countless were the scars he collected like badges of honour during this trip. Countless were the nights he cried himself to sleep as the screams of the innocents he had killed echoed in his mind.   At 16 years old, Askr came back to Vadsevik where he had been thought to be dead for years. There he found that his younger brother, Guðleifr had been trained to become Jarl in his absence. At this moment in time, the retainers and people of the Isle of Þrýsýr had no interest in taking the dour and brash youth that came back from the sea as their Jarl. Thus Egil, well liked by the fair folks, remained on the seat of power, stating he would give his place to Guðleifr when the time came. Though their rejection stung, Askr knew he wasn't the same person he had been before he left home. He knew he had become hardened by what he had seen, what he had done. That the people of Þrýsýr couldn't see a just ruler anymore in his eyes, but rather a cold-blooded warrior that could hurt them if he so wished. He hoped he could make them change their mind as he lived with them again. Though he couldn't stop the scathing remarks that would slip every so often when things didn't go his way.   It didn't take long for Askr to learn that Egil had never intended for him to come back after only a year. Passing through the corridors of the Ruler's Hall, silent as a cat, he heard Jarl Egil boasting about the "amazing" results his plot had brought forth. His retainers praised his quick thinking, of putting the child that could be easily swayed, rather than the one that would go against them, on the seat of power. It had always been the plan for him to come back 6 years later, as a teen hardened by pillaging and exploration in harsh conditions. As someone that would scare the Karls and Thralls under him, that would be seen as unfit to rule amongst the other Jarls. Enraged, Askr went to confront Jarl Egil on the matter. This worked in his uncle's favour. After all, who wanted a mad dog running about without a leash. Clearly Askr was deranged, had lost all manner of proper judgement and critical thinking, for him to barge in and roar that Jarl Egil was a traitor and usurper of the seat of power.   Askr was restrained by the warriors of the hall and sorcerers were called to see to it that he could never bring harm to the people of Vadsevik. A curse was planted unto him, so that he would be compelled to follow the orders given to him by those of his own blood.    For a long while, he was kept as his uncle's personnal guard. Jarl Egil had told everyone that he would keep him close in order to make sure he would be re-educated properly. Of course, aside from Egil's retainers and Askr's mother, no one knew of the curse attached to the teen. They believed he was truly trying to atone whenever they saw him doing degrading or dangerous tasks upon his uncle's orders. Slowly but surely, the flame in his eyes died down, and after two years of servitude he was abandonned by Egil. He was then put into the hands of his younger brother, Guðleifr, only 14 at the time whilst Askr was 18.   Though his younger brother was kinder than Jarl Egil, the shame of the situation didn't escape him. Guðleifr kept trying to coax him into saying his piece, what he thought of this or that, but even if he had explicit permission he found himself afraid to do so. He began voicing his thoughts by keeping his interventions quiet and monosyllabic. It almost sickened him how happy Guðleifr would look whenever he'd have to use more than 2 words to express an idea. Was he a tool? A brother? A warrior? A friend? He didn't know anymore.   In time, he took the situation in stride and simply accepted it. He humoured his brother, made him think that he'd gladly put his life on the line for him, when he himself didn't even now if he'd do it, if not for the curse.   The year he turned 36, Jarl Egil Hàkonson finally passed away, though the news of it were brought far from home. The war against the Kingdom of Naeya had been raging. He and Guðleifr had been sent with a war party to participate in the battles. For now, the old Shield-maiden, Unn, was taking care of matters at Vadsevik, but upon Guðleifr's return he would be made Jarl.   Two years have come and gone since then, and the war still isn't over.

Sexuality

Bisexual

Education

Learned as the eldest son of a Jarl and the one to take the position in his younger years. Has a fairly good education, though was relayed to the role of warrior and protector once his uncle took the position of Jarl, favoring his younger brother as successor once he was of age.   Knows how to read and write, as well as speak many different languages. Smarter than he first appears to be.

Employment

Works under his brother, Guðleifr, as a warrior and second in command in his war party. In times of peace, would work as his personnal guard and adviser as he handles the territory.

Mental Trauma

Lost his father at 10 years old and was promptly removed from the household by his uncle who wanted to favour a successor that would be more malleable. Askr was sent on a boat to join raiders in their pillaging of the coasts and exploration of distant lands. He learned to take care of himself amongst adults who didn't care much that a child was with them. He thus became a pretty glum fellow that sees no point in being friendly, polite or playful.

Morality & Philosophy

Abhors anyone that puts weapons into children's hands and ask them to fight. He hates most of his fellow warriors that think only of battle and mead. There's much more to life than fight to one day be felled in battle and reach the Isle Beyond the Fog, Friðarfjall.

Difficult to communicate with, seeing how he is a man of few words... and the few he has can be quite biting if he decides he doesn't enjoy your company. Prefers silence and peace than empty words that don't mean much.
