Karrog

Karrog, also known as the Sunken, was a mythological beast in the Wildlands.

Summary

Karrog was a mythical monster in the Wildlands in the 3rd era.   Many of the villages in the wildlands had long abandoned temples from the Sons of the Scale which had large metal scales on the front of them. It was said that children who misbehaved would tip the scale in the wrong direction and if it went too far, all the children would be punished. Those who had gone too far in the wrong direction would be stolen in the middle of the night, brought into the forest, and force fed a rock for every bad thing they did, then thrown into the river by the Sunken, where they would sink to the bottom and drown.   Karrog was often described in two different forms.   The first was the watcher, often depicted as a raccoon. The watcher would walk along villages and watch over everyone to make sure they behaved well. He would adjust the scales in the town to warn the children of their actions.   The second was the grabber, a tall, monsterous, bipedal, creature that would break into houses at night, slipping through cracks in the walls. He would grab children by their hair and drag them out into the woods never to be seen again.

Spread

Many different villages in the Wildlands have their own version of the myth to keep naughty children safe and well behaved.

Variations & Mutation

The myth changes slightly depending on the location of where it is being told. Most often Karrog uses nearby rivers to drown misbehaving children, but in other variations he uses lakes, swamps, or even the sea itself, depending on what is nearby.

In Art

A common poem-
Beware the woods when the moons are gone,
Karrog the sunken will take you before dawn .
He steals the naughty, rude, and vile,
Force-feeding them stones, coated in bile.
Then into the river, the children are thrown,
Drowning in cold with their sinful stone...
